Default Day 3...

So I got Pichi (pronounced peachy) 3 days ago. He just started eating a little bit yesterday and this morning I heard him playing with his bell toy. I've been reading to him a lot and cleaning his cage....

But... Of course I'm anxious for him to get comfortable with me so today I just put my hand in the cage... He didn't move and I couldn't tell if he was trembling. I stroked his chest and he didn't move. Then I just slowly took my hand out and started talking to him again. Later I made a smooching sound to say goodbye as I was headed to school and he mimicked me!

Am I doing things right?

Welcome to talk budgies. The forum is loaded with great info that will be of great help for you and your bird's blossoming relationship. Generally when we bring a new bird home, the best thing to do is keep their cage covered on three sides to help them feel secure in their strange new environment. Hand contact should be avoided for the first two week's as you build your budgies trust by spending time by the cage and talking to him/her in soft tones. Check out the sticky's at the top of each section here as they are loaded with great info from very experienced folk's and will help you from maybe making mistakes. Glad you found talk budgies...

Hi there and welcome to TB!

It's great to know you've decided to adopt little Pichi! I bet he's just adorable and it's a good sign that he's eating and playing! However, I think you're moving a little too fast for your little friend.
It's usually recommended you give a new bird 2 weeks to settle in. Even though you're excited, it's still the best for him so he can settle into his new home.
After two weeks, you can start taming him. He probably let you stroke him as he was indeed terrified, he's in a new place and budgies can't help but be submissive for the first few days.
Start by sitting by his cage and just talking to him or reading during the two weeks to get him used to you. Then, after the two weeks is finished, you rest your hand in the cage lightly for a few minutes a few times a day until he's comfortable, then you can put your hand closer to him a few minutes a day, and finally you can start "step up" commands. During this time, you can offer him seed in your hand and see if he eats it, this is good for building trust.
If you do it like this, he will probably adjust to you much easier
Hope this helps! Best of luck with little Pichi and we'd love to see pictures when you get a chance

Thank you guys for replying! I found something else today. My dad gave him food and water by bringing the bowls up to him, while I was at school, and Pichi ate! He also let my dad pet him and ended up putting one foot on my dads finger. Good sign? :O

Hello and a warm welcome to TB!

Congratulations on getting your new little guy. This is only the start of a great friendship

You've received great advice already and I'd like to reiterate all of it: take it slow. I know only too well how excruciating it is to wait when you get your first bird (We only got ours a month ago). Especially when you read all the great stories of all the amazing things that these little guys do with their long-time owners.

The thing is, the reason why these other little guys are so closely bonded to their owner is because they were given a lot of time and a lot of space when they arrived in their new home

Keep reading to him and only start 'hand stuff' after two weeks or so.

New budgies can sometimes be so scared when they first arrive that they do whatever you want them to. But if you push it too far in that stage, you could lose their trust forever. If you take the time to talk to your bird a a lot and, more importantly, watch him, you will develop an understanding of him that will be a great help later when taming and bonding really start.

I look forward to your future posts. Do share some pictures: we all love seeing the new arrivals to the flock

Question Thank you!

Thank you to all for the great advice. I'll try to be more patient I'll also post pictures when he seems more comfortable around me

BTW question.

I was reading to Pichi and I noticed him opening and closing his mouth for a while and it wasnt yawning. Any ideas on why or what that means?

Sometimes birds "rearrange" their crop, and the open and close their beak and stretch. He's probably just getting comfy to hear a story
I know you guys will be close friends soon!

I've noticed that Clouds does that whenever I'm talking to him and i suspect that's his way of trying out 'people talk'. Keep talking to him, maybe one day he'll surprise you by talking back

Default What happened... :o

Today, as I was clening Pichi's cage he kept looking at my hand and when I went to put a perch in (which I had to clean) He started opening and closing his mouth so I took my hand out and started talking to him and he just kept opening and closing his mouth. Later, I restocked him on water and he jumped to the perch closest to my hand. (I know im impatient....) I tried putting just my finger out and infront of his belly and he perched one of his feet on me. I tried staying as still as I could until he removed it then I slowly took my hand out. Thoughts? :O
