Who picks who?

I was wondering... In the budgie world, is it the females who usually pick the males as a mate since they're usually dominant? Or do the boys make the first move?

Curious if in a cage with mostly females and one male, if it's the male who has a pick of all the girls, or the female who fights the other girls and gets recognized as the most dominant, then gets the male (or pick of males if more than one to choose from).

Hm, good question. I would assume its the girl that chooses as that seems to be the case in all the animals that I can think of. The female will decide if she enjoys the male budgies song/dances and displays for her affection. And I suppose if he grabs the attention of your other girlies, then hes a very lucky guy! Budgies aren't generally monogamous although they can bond to one specific birdy. I only hope that all your girl budgies dont get too territorial and nasty to each other over breeding territory.

Thanks, I guess that is true about most female animals being the ones to choose whether or not to go with or reject the male. Never thought of that. I was just wondering who makes the first move with budgies.

I only have one male and one female with a cage divider in place most of the time, but I got to thinking what would happen if there were multiple budgies :).

I never had more than 2 budgies sharing a cage in order to avoid potential problems with fighting.
I have, however observed my pairs over the years and it's usually the male the one who starts to get more curious about his mate and initiates courtship.
It is then up to the female to accept or decline his advances and it may take a while for the male to successfully win the female's heart. :)

Thanks, the poor guys... at the mercy of the girls. He hopes he's good enough for her LOL :giggle:
