Default Exciting news about Mink!

My little girl is growing up . She is finally starting her FIRST molt!!
She is 14 weeks old today.

I saw 4 flight feathers today when I changed the papers. I was so excited ! Her wings were clipped by the bird store SO short that I have to make sure she doesn't fall from too high or she'll drop like a rock. Thank goodness finally!

Now I will be curious to see how much if any, her body color changes. She is an interesting 'mixed' color of olive with a distinct violet factor overlay. I wonder if she will remain still olive, or will get more bluish? We shall see.

Yay for her first molt ! I believe I'm seeing Ivy's for the first time now. Question about the clipped wings; I often have my birds wings clipped. Is that something that most don't practice? I only have it done so that I'm assured that when they are out and about that they don't fly into one of the many ceiling fans I have in my house. That and I have many sliding glass doors and worry about them flying into them thinking nothing is there. I do feel a tad bit of guilt taking away their flight, but feel justified in that I feel like I'm protecting them. However, I never have their wings clipped too short. They are still able to glide quit well. Anyway, hope to hear soon what she turns out to be! Are you partial to any color in particular? I kind of like the olive myself.

And now, the wait begins--Is little Mink a SF VIOLET or a DF VIOLET?

We shall see....

How exciting that she's starting her first moult! Can't wait to see her in her "big girl" feathers

Nadia, as far as clipping goes, I've done both over the years. It's really a personal decision, and most people base it on circumstance, and safety. At one time, I had a home where the parrots were able to fly in a good sized living room. That was ideal... until I moved where the living room was such that the front and back doors were right there.. too risky. For the time being, the parrots are in a bedroom, and clipped. It's mainly for their safety because Robin has already bitten two toenails (permanently) off Griffin . Clipping can also can provide a temporary attitude adjustment for a hormonal parrot or one going through a biting phase. Many people are against clipping birds. Again, you have to base your decision on particular factors in your home, and everyone's home and situation is different .

I'd like the budgies to be able to get out and fly, but I am preparing to type a whole other thread on Twigs and Mink, and this topic, so I won't mention it here.

So SW, you will be able to tell if Mink is sf or df violet finally!! I can hardly wait to see how she's going to look!

Julie,

It's so much fun anticipating and watching for the color changes with the first couple of molts, isn't it? I'm sure Mink is going to be absolutely gorgeous when she has her nice new feathers and I'm going to be looking forward to seeing lots of pictures!

My little Sunny went from being almost totally yellow as a baby to a very vibrant green and yellow pied young man! I was quite amazed as more and more of the green kept appearing.

Deborah, I'm always impatiently waiting with the ones who come with a different juvenile color. It's so fun to see the change, and birds always look better in adult plumage even if the color isn't much different.

I bet you were surprised with Sunny! I wouldn't have thought that could happen, to start out yellow and turn green/yellow pied later wow.

Some mutations can change a bit, some will stay the same .

Last week when I weighed Mink she was 45 grams. Do you know at about what age they attain full adult weight? She still looks so petite. Except when next to "Mr. Tiny" the twiggy little Twigs

Okay... Pics coming soon. As I told Nick, I got a new phone (Motorola Droid Turbo) and I want to throw it out the window I want my iPhone back!!! It was easier to use I'll do it soon... No excuse, I guess I can use the iPad, but I don't like the pic quality. Or I could find my digital camera.....
