Default 1 week to our big holiday

In a week exactly, our family is going on a long vacation in Malaysia. It is a really big occasion as our friends and family from Europe and other parts of the world are joining us for the duration. Incidentally, we are also getting married there

I know, I know, this is great news and we are certainly looking forward to it.

HOWEVER I am of course now rather worried that Clouds is going to be left behind for the whole time (almost 4 weeks). We have a house-sitter booked in and she's really excited about looking after the budgie. She's a really lovely person who just qualified as a nurse and has been house-sitting in our neighbourhood a lot this year. She also looks after kids, so very responsible and trustworthy (and I like her anyway).

Still, I would like to get everybudgie's input and advice. I still have a short week to organise stuff so what do you recommend?

I don't even know where to start with questions:
- Notes and instructions to leave for her? (She's got zero experience with birds)
- Any tips to make it easier on Clouds?
- Type of bikini to pack? (maybe not)

Thank you all for the input

(PS Has anyone else noted the uncanny good timing of my new signature? Deborah has got some seriously good intuition going, no?)

Whooo Hoooo!! That is super exciting news!
Congratulations and Best Wishes for your upcoming nuptuals.

[With regard to the theme I picked for your signature, well what can I say other than I'm psycho.
Umm, errr I meant Psychic. That's what I meant, yeah -- Psychic. ]

With regard to Clouds – I love organizing and making lists so here are my suggestions.

1. Have the house/bird-sitter come over to meet Clouds and get to know him a few days prior to your departure so both you and she will feel confident in her ability to handle things while you are away.
2. Prepare a 3 ring binder with print-outs of the information you think she may need. Some suggestions follow:

Contact Information for Avian Vet: Name/Phone Number/Location

Map and Directions from your home to the Avian Vet’s office

Back up “Emergency” Vet contact information and directions in case your regular Avian Vet does not offer Emergency hours

Schedule of feeding time(s), how often to change water and when/how/what to use to clean cage, food and water dishes, etc.

List of Safe foods

List of Toxic foods

If Clouds to be allowed to have “out-of-cage” time while you are away specify where this is to take place and any precautions you expect the bird-sitter to take

List of the 50 Common Dangers to Budgies

https://talkbudgies.com/your-budgies-...-medicine.html

https://talkbudgies.com/your-budgies-...-feathers.html

If you'd like, you may also give her my actual email address so if she has any questions or concerns while you are away I can provide her with assistance. I’ll send the contact info to you in a Private Message.

Hope that helps a little.

I would suggest a few things, but Deb, you nailed it! Make a list like Deb's and your Clouds will be fine.
Congratulations on your upcoming wedding Best wishes!! This is so exciting!!

Thank you. The wedding is sort of incidental. I still haven't organised anything. I mean zip.
It was supposed to just be a shared holiday but then last year my lovely and silly Alex suggested that, as we're not likely to get everyone in the same place again for a long time, it would be the ideal opportunity to get married. He sort of cornered me with his proposal too

Thank you for all the suggestions and links. Thanks also for the email address offer (yes please!)
I had jotted down a few things already, including link to this forum and of course avian vet details. But your list us MUCH better

There may be an opportunity to have a neighbour, who owns budgies ,look after Clouds at their place during our absence. It's not confirmed yet and I am a little bit reluctant because Clouds is only starting to settle in his new house, so not keen on changing his environment again. I would much prefer he was home, with his cage, his tree etc.

Somehow I think that new person is better than new person + new place, even if new place would have the benefit of other birds...

In fact, on the other bird front I am also reluctant because Clouds has started seeing us as his flock so not really keen to push him back the other way and then miss his new friends when we come back.

Any thoughts?

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!!

If you have confidence that the house-sitter is responsible and will do a good job in catering to your Clouds needs then I think it would be the best option.

Even though your other option you have people who are experienced in taking care of budgies, you wouldn't know if Clouds would be quarantined from the other budgies. You will also run the risk of Clouds finding out about the budgies in the new place he is in, interact with them and by the time when he goes back home he can be depressed for having had a taste of what it feels like to be on a budgie flock and then having that taken away from him.

I think Clouds should stay in his familiar environment. The house-sitter would be the better option. Do you have a travel cage just in case Clouds needs to be taken to the vet? Or does your vet make house calls?

Enjoy your holidays and congratulations on your wedding!

Ahh congrats to your wedding and vacation in Malaysia, Dee! I've also been to Malaysia once and stayed at a friend's house in Kuala Lumpur, which is a very beautiful and clean city. Being the bird lover that you are, I assume you'd be visiting the famous KL Bird Park. If you do, please take some photos of the exotic birdies there for us to indulge.

I agree with aluz and nuxi that having Clouds in his own environment (for exactly the reasons you listed) is much better for him.

And... who needs to plan for a wedding anyway? Find a person who can perfom the ceremony - do it on the beach in a casual atmosphere and just make it as laid-back and relaxed as possible. Sounds PERFECT to me!!

Thank you and thank you. I'm glad that you agree with me. She is an awesome young woman and if I have trusted her in my child in the past, I'm certainly happy to leave his bird with her too
Your input puts my mind at rest so thank you again!

The vet does make house calls. We don't have a travel cage but if needed he travelled rather well in his big cage last time, which easily fits in our big car, which the house sitter is free to use

Thank you for replying and for your kind thoughts too.

We won't be staying in KL except in transit to our island, but I'll make sure to take as many pictures of birds as I can during our stay!

Thanks for that. It really makes me feel a lot better knowing that you all agree with each other and that y thinking was correct.

Relaxed barbecue on the beach is exactly the plan! (Great minds think alike )
The dress code is quite strict though: everyone is requested to wear something they feel comfortable and happy in. No exceptions.
That's as far as the plan go. Alex was trying to push the idea that we should let the hotel organise but I had to put my foot down. I've organised enough venues with hotel to know how they do things. If anyone tries to put a ribbon on one chair the bride is going to go
