Aviary building materials
Hello everyone! So I am moving into a brand new house and have decided that I am going to build an indoor aviary for my budgies. I am using wire cage mesh that is galvanized after welding which I have heard is much safer, and I also plan on using untreated pine wood. I am just curious to know if anyone else has done this before and if I still need to weather and vinegar wash the wire even though it's GAW. If anyone has any information on how long to weather wire and how to vinegar wash it that would be greatly appreciated, any extra info on wood types or aviary ideas would also be great:)

We considered building a large flight cage, but did extensive reading on the matter and didn't want to go through the hassle of washing the 'chicken wire' or similar to remove the galvanizing. As far as I know, all galvanizing is poisonous to birds.

You must be extremely careful because Galvanized metal is steel that is coated with zinc.

Heavy metal poisoning very dangerous for budgies.

This is a quote from the article in the above link:
"Prevention - can I do it? Preventing your pet from getting access to anything containing lead is difficult but not impossible. Probably restricting his/her area is the best bet. Have an area that you know has no lead in it is the best bet. Keeping them out of garages and storage sheds is a must.

Zinc poisoning is from your aviary wire. New wire is the worst but I have seen several cases where the wire was several years old. Imported wire
( Chinese ) appears to be the most toxic. Batches of wire can vary in their toxicity level so it is difficult to guess which wire is the safest.

Aging the wire is recommended, leave the roll out in the weather for at least 12 months before using it. Washing the wire in an acidic solution (white vinegar) is also recommended but is not 100 % effective

If I was able to find stainless steel or nickel plated wire mesh I would get that, the price of the actual mesh is not a big concern. But unfortunately no where near me sells anything like that and all the shipping costs for it online are ridiculous. I've been trying to find alternate options but at this point I'm not sure if im even going to be able to build the aviary at this point unless I can figure something safe out.
