Default Any speed cleaning tips for the once a month deep cleaning

It took me a long time to pull everything apart and put it back together. A good 2 hours for mid size wire cage, far too long I need to speed it up a bit. I can't dedicate 2 hours like that every month. Alec (my son) was throwing tantrums because he wanted my attention. Tico (budgie) was stressed because I was messing with his stuff and I finally had to put him in his carrier and stick him in a dark corner. State of Alabama kept calling because they were trying to straighten out the details with my son's medicaid waiver. The house is wreck, nothing is clean but hey the bird cage is clean as a whistle and thoroughly disinfected.

Hey, you sound like you've got kids!

It took me a good hour at the last weekend to scrub everything but then again I have a large deck and on a sunny day the hose does accelerate things a little.

How's your shower?

Have you ever checked out the Flylady cleaning stuff? Her philosophy is to break big cleaning tasks into smaller pieces that you do over time, usually in 15 minute increments.

Seriously, once I started doing it that way, it really made it a -lot- less frustrating for me. I deep clean perches and toys on week 1, playgyms on week 2, the cage base and surrounding area on week 3, and the cage itself on week 4.

I find that spending 5-15 minutes or whatever a weekend was easier (both to do and to remember) than one huge cleaning session once a month.

With five F040 flight cages, "deep cleaning" can take several hours due to added difficulty resulting from arthritis in my hands.
Just trying to get all the toys and perches out of the cages is difficult -- to say nothing of the time it takes for reassembly.

For me, simply spending a few minutes every day wiping the cages, toys, and perches down with white vinegar without removing them from the cages when I change out the cage liners and food and water dishes lessens the need for disassembling everything for "deep cleaning" sessions.

Deb, do you dilute the white vinegar?

I like this idea of dividing components into alternating bite size chunks every week for deep clean. Benedict's cage takes one and a half hours every 2 weeks and with an even bigger cage than his about to come into play for the quarantine babies I estimate that one will take at least 2 hours. It took longer than that to sterilise it when it arrived! And that was with no furniture!

Hi, Simon!
No, I don't dilute the white vinegar -- I just use it straight from the jug.

I love these tips... It seems like I'm always cleaning something. How do you guys organizing the little 'gifts' the budgies leave when they are out flying? I try to take a daily look see and clean spots as needed. But it always seems like there are little presents from them I miss.
Deborah.. do you wipe all the cages every day??? All over every cage?? Yikos.
Here are my hard spots to clean... between the bars and base of the cage. With Lemony decimating her cuttlebones at the speed of sound, I have 'white powder' (not THAT white powder) in every imaginable crevice. I also find bits of kebobs, carrots, seed, poo, etc. Vacuuming only goes so far.. seems like I have to take the cage apart or outside and blast in with a hose. Other ideas??

Every weekend I thoroughly clean and wash my two cages which house five budgies. It takes me 1-1.5 hrs for both the cages. The cage trays are washed every two days. To clean the cage thoroughly can be a tedious job but it needs to be done.

Well, sunnydyazz.. I was looking for the MAGIC answer!! OK.. I have 2 large flight cages and one smaller cage for the 5 of mine. Sounds like we are stuck with doing what we do.

Do you all wash the food/water dishes daily too??
