Default Help Sexing My Two Budgies, Please?

Hi! I currently own two budgies and want to introduce a third. I believe them both to be females, however I'm not totally certain and was wondering if someone could help me out?

I want to make sure their genders before introducing a third, just in case.

Popsicle is the blue one and Bridgette is the green one

If the first two pictures aren't good enough I can take better ones in the morning, I was getting them ready for bed and they weren't enjoying my phone

Welcome to the forums!
You are correct, you do have two beautiful females there.

May I ask why you want to add a third budgie? If both your girls are caged together and getting along well, adding a third bird into their domain may very well disrupt things and lead to bad fighting. Not to mention it's always best to have an even number of budgies so that no bird gets left out.

Hi Aluz,

Thank you for confirming that they are both female, that is incredibly helpful!

I was thinking about adding a third budgie because, when I adopted Bridgette from a (wonderful) shelter they told me that she was found as a stray. So I'm not sure if she had companions before but she has terrible separation anxiety and will become quite stressed if she's being ignored, especially by Popsicle.

I was hoping a third companion may be just what both she and Popsicle need.

Do you think it's a good idea? Or are there any alternatives I might be able to look at?

You're welcome!

A decision like this must be very well thought over. You may not know, but it's usually not a very good idea to house two or more females together in the same cage, temperaments can flare up as they get into breeding condition and their hormones go crazy and they start to be overly territorial and aggressive.

Given the fact both your girls get along well and have been living harmoniously, adding a third budgie could mess up the balance. It could be very troublesome to add a third female (unless you are extremely lucky and get a girl with an incredibly sweet temperament).
If you get a male you will run the risk of having both your girls fighting for the male's attention, or in another scenario you will have the male bonding with one of your girls and then the couple turns against your other girl. These are all likely scenarios.

If you do decide to get a companion, then what you can do after quarantine time is over is placing him with one of your girls in a separate cage and your other girl will be alone on a separate cage close by.
Ideally instead of getting one budgie, you could get two males so no bird gets left out without a mate.

Good luck with your decision!

Wow, thank you again, this information is really helpful

When the girls got too aggravated during the start of spring (I assume that was some hormones coming in) I did separate them, I only had to do this once however and it only lasted about two days before Bridgette decided she would rather cuddle with Popsicle than fight with her :3 After that they've been very harmonious together!

I will absolutely have a good talk with the adoption counselors before thinking about adding a third girl.

Hi and to Talk Budgies!

I agree with aluz. I would carefully consider the decision of whether to get another budgie and if you do so I'd ensure you keep an even number. In my experience having three isn't a good scenario. You'll also need to ensure you have cage which meets the requirement for housing four budgies as well as at least one (and preferably two) additional cages in case they are needed to separate the budgies, and to use for quarantine/hospital cages.

If you do decide to get additional budgies, please remember you should quarantine the new bird(s) for 4-6 weeks.
Quarantine means housing your new bird in a different cage in a different room as far away as possible from the room your current bird(s) is in for a period of 4-6 weeks.

Budgies mask symptoms when they are ill. Symptoms may not show up for over two weeks. Often you will not even realize your bird is not well. Many budgie illnesses are airborne which is why you need to quarantine your new bird in a completely different room.

Never fighting.
Even though some are in breeding condition.
