Question Newbie Owner Here! Meet Taco

Hi all,

I am a brand new budgie owner and animal lover in general. I did a lot of research and reading, and brought home my new budgie 4 days ago. I think I'm doing all the right things to help him adjust. He seems to be eating, and will stretch out and preen a bit...but he's so quiet! And he rarely moves or shows interest in playing with any of the toys in his cage yet.
I know I need to be patient, I guess I'm just looking for words of encouragement and any advice.
He did come from a pet store, and was very active there with the other birds - hopping around a lot and chirping loudly. We've only heard him let out a handful of chirps in the last four days and I'm worried. I want him to be happy here and feel free to play and be as active as he's used to.
I guess I'm just afraid he'll forever be silent and sitting in one spot, and not a very happy budgie.
Help me out

Hi and to Talk Budgies!

Taco is actually a very cute little female budgie.
You can tell she's female because her cere is brown and crusty which means she is currently in breeding condition.
(This does not mean she should be bred )

Budgies are often submissive for a few days because they're terrified.

She may sit quietly and not move, chirp or sing.
If she sits near the bottom of the cage, you can scatter some seed on the cage floor so she can find food until it learns where her food dish is. You can also place a very shallow dish with a little water on the cage floor for her.

Do not handle or touch her for about 2 weeks.

To build your budgie’s trust, sit by her cage and read, talk or sing quietly to her for a period of at least 10-15 minutes, 3 or 4 times day. After the 2nd or 3rd day, rest your hand on the outside of the cage when you talk to her so she'll learn that your hand is safe and will not hurt her.

After a week, rest your hand inside the cage when you talk.
Don’t make sudden moves, don’t try to touch her.
Let her get used to the idea that the hand is now in her safe place and not harming her.
After 2 weeks, begin moving your hand slowly toward Taco and begin your taming and bonding sessions.

To familiarize yourself with the forums, please take the time to read through all of the How To Guides, the FAQs and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.
You'll find most of your basic questions are answered after you've read through all of them.

I'm looking forward to hearing all about Taco and hopefully seeing more pictures of your little girl soon!!

Thank you, everyone! I do have one more thing that I'm going to drive myself crazy over lol.
I'm worried about temperature changes and accidentally hurting my budgie...like to the point that I don't want to have windows open or turn the AC on (which my husband is not loving, since it's the middle of summer).
How will I know if Taco is bothered by the changes in temperature of our home? We also live in a basement level apartment that can get chilly overnight and I'm paranoid about my budgie getting sick or worse because of it.
I already love my baby bird and I think I'm worrying myself unnecessarily over some things.
Any thoughts?

Oh and one more question - I've seen Taco eating food but I'm not sure if she is drinking any water?
If water is available, will she drink it? Maybe while we are not around?
I don't want to worry that she's dehydrating herself

I wouldn't worry too much about the water. I RARELY see my birds getting water. I think they are generally shy to drink in front of us.(show her the water dish and sit her infront of it if you are worried she may not know where the water is) Congrats on your baby girl bird! She is SO adorable... just look at those huge eyes

Just make sure she isn't under any air conditioning vents or near any drafts.

Enjoy your little Taco!

I agree with mascara...keep away from vent's, register's, drafty window's, etc. Budgies comfort levels are best maintained between 70 - 80 degree's farenheit, but a healthy budgy can go higher or lower than that without ill effect.

Do you cover your bird at night, if not, you can. You are just experiencing the new bird paranoia that we can all relate to from experience. It will be all good, you found talk budgies forum...

Wow Taco is beautiful what an unusual colour

I cover my birds cage at night with a bed sheet as the first layer and then a fleece blanket over that to stop drafts. I don't put the fleece as the first layer so that he can't eat the fibres as that can be harmful to them if digested.
