Exclamation Really need a little help! He V She?

Hi I am new to the budgie game though I care for these two like kids of my own. However there are a few issues going on. Lulu (blue and white) we were informed is a female and Romeo (yellow) is a male. Both ceres changed colour with Lulus going to a very darkish brown/purple (pic 1 befores and afters) and Romeo now more a pink/red (pic2). Would it be true that Lulu is female and Romeo male or have the pet store got the sex wrong with Romeo?

Additionally, based on everything I have read online it appears Lulu is now in a breeding cycle based on the colour of the cere now but will she forever be in this because she has become bossy, eats the food always first, prevents wee Romeo from getting some, bites him and me on occasion and has changed in personality from being friendly to denfensive. It is very hard to tame them now as a result

On a separate note we have just discovered a small scratch/hole on Romeos beak (also shown in the pic2) - should we be concerned about this?

Many issues going on with these two so am just trying to make them as happy together as I can, considered splitting them up but half the time they are great together, however the other half she is pretty bad to him! I am hoping this beak injury Romeo has was not caused by Lulu.

Sorry for the long listing but need help in a few areas

Welcome to the forums!
You are correct on your gorgeous couple's genders, Lulu is a female and Romeo is a male.
Has Lulu been constantly bullying Romeo? Sometimes there are light bickerings between budgies especially as they are getting ready to sleep for the night, they can also argue over food. To avoid the bickerings over food or a favourite toy, it's always best to have twos of everything, two food dishes, two separate pieces of vegetables for each of them, two toys of the same characteristics, etc.

If Lulu has dented Romeo's beak, then that falls under the more vicious fighting category and for your boy's safety it would be best to separate him from Lulu.
Since her cere is now dark brown it really does mean she is in breeding condition and she can in fact get more moody during this time. Just do not give her anything that she could use as a nest, sometimes the behaviour can escalate to worse when a nest or hiding spot is made available to them.
Eventually her cere will revert to the creamy white colour and she will be out of breeding condition.
Keep a close eye on them and if you see bad fighting then do separate each budgie into it's own cage. You can move your Lulu into a different cage and by doing so you have a good chance of her going out of breeding condition.
Your Romeo's beak will heal with time, you don't need to worry.

Good luck!

Hi and to Talk Budgies!

I agree with all the excellent advice aluz has offered.
If Lulu excessively bullies Romeo, then the best thing for Romeo will to to separate the two.

If you do leave them together, please do everything possible to discourage breeding. Take a look at this link:

A sincere welcome to the forums!
Well, there's not much to add to the expertise of everyone who's already commented above, but I will heartily agree with it! Romeo and Lulu are just adorable

I'd just like to add that since Romeo is recessive pied, his cere will stay pink for his whole life and he'll keep his black eyes.

Hope to see more of them around, and feel free to ask about anything you may be wondering about!
