Default Adult budgie taming?

I have a 3 year old budgie who is already mostly tame, but I haven't been able to handle him for quite a long time. Now he is quite skittish and tends to bite if I get too close, the thing is I have started to realise that I tend to flinch when his beak gets too close to my hand and I can't stop??

I really wish to handle him again like I used to but I don't know what to do in order to get him on my hand again ...
Thank you for all of your help !

Hello, and welcome to talk budgies. Sound's like he has gotten used to not being handled, and may be needing reminded that it is a good thing...

Start by spending time sitting by the cage talking to him regularly, in soft encouraging tones. Then start doing the same thing with your hand in the cage but do not attempt to move your hand to him. It will take some time, but eventually you will be able to move your hand closer without him feeling uncomfortable. You can then start offering food/treats from your hand, and progress to step up training. It is a situation to handle as if he is brand new.

Check out our taming and bonding section sticky's for lot's of really good info, and training/bonding tip's, and of course ask any question's that come up...

Hi and welcome to TB!

I agree with Randy completely. You'll just have to go back and re-establish the things that you worked on with him, and start by talking to him and giving him some space just like when you first got him. Eventually you can work up to taming like you did initially, but it'll be faster because I think he'll remember most of it, it'll just be necessary to reaffirm that.

Good luck with your boy! It's lovely to have you with us, we'd love to see pictures if you have them and feel free to ask about anything else you're unsure of
