Unhappy Oh no!!!!

This morning I let my 3 out for some free time. I stupidly left the door to the room they are in open. Greenbird that's her name is very naughty and feisty. She gets into everything and is the pistol of the group. She flew out of the room into the living room where my two chocolate labs are. Yes you guessed it by the time I got there one of my labs had her in his mouth. I yelled NO and he dropped her. This happened this morning and she is still very quiet and not eating. She looks better as time goes on, but I'm worried because she's just too quiet and sleeping a lot. I could just kick myself. She was her usual stinker self this morning and now she s not. Anything special I should do? Labs have soft mouths so I don't think there are injuries, but she's clearly not herself.

Nancy

Edit: I put a food dish in by her and she's eating some. And she just kicked Birdie off the food dish when Birdie tried to join. Okay I feel better - she's starting to act like her bratty booger self.

Omg Nancy that's an awful experience! I'm far from being an expert, others will probably give you better advice, but I would start by giving Greenbird some budgie first aid care. Meaning: keeping her warm (warmer than room temperature), spending more time with her to reassure her and giving her treats.

Just to be sure, I'd consider bringing her to the vet for a quick check up. Check if she's eating normally, drinking water and check the color and consistency of her stool (if they are normal or have changed).

I hope that Greenbird will be alright...

Have you checked her over very carefully to see if there are any external injuries?

I'd suggest you take her for a check up with your Avian Vet.
Dogs carry bacteria in their saliva that can be harmful or fatal to birds and she could have sustained internal injuries.

Be sure you are giving her ACV in her water to boost her immune system.

thanks PetieLola and FaeryBee. I do have the room warmer and she just went down to the original food bowl to eat. I did check her over and did not see any external injuries. I am assuming ACV is apple cider vinegar? Thanks for the link. I'll go have a look. She seems to be more alert now, but if things get worse I'll call the vet. I learned my lesson.

It does indeed sound as though you are very lucky. Keep an aye on her as she could still have some sort of crush or strain injury you never know. It is good she is eating, If at all possible encourage her to have a bath or mist her to help get dog saliva off her.
She may start to have some runny poops this will most probably be from stress or fear related.

Yes, ACV is Apple Cider Vinegar with the mother as explained in the link.

I'm certain you'll be very careful to ensure the door is properly shut prior to giving your budgies out of cage time now.
There is nothing quite like a near-catastrophe to serve as a wake-up reminder for us, is there?

Lots of positive thoughts are being sent for little Greenbird.
I hope that with a bit of time and lots of TLC she will quickly recover from the stress of her recent traumatic experience.

Thanks - I feel like such a bad bird mom. Shame on me - I know better than to leave that door open and I clearly wasn't thinking. Definitely a wake up call. Even my son said , " mom why didn't you close the door" ? Duh - thank goodness Niner (my dog) dropped her immediately. I've been watching her and she's acting much more like herself - thank goodness - lesson learned. Thanks everyone for your help and support. Greenbird is about 5 1/2 years old. I'm rather attached to her even though she's a brat lol

Please don't beat yourself up too much!
We all do "stupid" things from time to time and we all make mistakes because we are only human.

The important thing is we do the best we can, we learn and we forgive one another and ourselves.

Give Greenbird lots of attention and TLC

AND -- do something nice for yourself as well.

I agree with Deb, please don't take it too heart that you are a bad birdie mum. Accidents do happen, I am so happy she appears to be ok most probably scared your dog as well.

Poor little Greenbird. She probably won't ever want to fly into the living room again either. She's probably asking herself, "Why did I do that?" Lesson learned.
