Question Need help cleaning my Buddy's cage

Hello all

Bit of help please?

I have the Hagen Vision S01 cage and Buddy loves it, however I am having a hard time cleaning it.

The bottom of the cage snaps out and you lift the top to take it away and clean it.
Here is the issue, Buddy will not fly up to the top of the cage but stay on the bottom so I am scared he will fly away while I try and move the top half over to another spot.

I have only had him a week this evening and he is no where close to tame and I do not want him hurting himself zipping all over the house.

Any idea to get him to scoot to the top so I can clean the cage properly?

Thank you

Barry

Hi, Barry --

Have you tried coaxing Buddy up to the top of his cage with some millet?

I'm not very familiar with the Vision cages.

Another thought would be -- Is there a way you can slip your hand in between the top portion and the bottom portion and gently move it toward Buddy to encourage him to move upward into the top portion of the cage then quickly slide the bottom out and put the top down on a flat surface?

If you can't get him to go up top, take his cage into a small bedroom or bathroom that you make birdsafe first. If you have to catch him to get him back in use a small hand towel to alleviate fear of your hand...

Hello

This is the cage Budgerigar Cages at zooplus: Hagen Bird Cage Vision II Model S01

Problem is that I need two hands to lift it so I would have to be ninja fast or see if I can tempt him like you said with millet which he loves.

I am more worried about him zipping free and not being tamed yet he will hurt himself as he has yet to be out of the cage, and I do not want the poor guy freaking out zipping from floor to floor in my house as I try and chase him.

I was thinking of maybe cutting a piece of cardboard that can lay on top of the food guards which would now make a "new" bottom for the cage and maybe that will work as he wont be able to escape

Think that might work?

Barry

P.S New pics of him coming soon, he is now a happy bird, chattering to me in his cage telling me all about that is going on lol

I think taking his cage into a bathroom or small bedroom as Randy suggested is a good idea. Cover the mirror(s) with a sheet or towel and have a soft cloth handy "just in case".

Then try the millet bribe. If that doesn't work, you can try your "false bottom" idea using the cardboard.

If he does happen to get out of the cage, at least you'll have him in a contained area.

I wouldn't chase him around if he gets out.
Go about your business of cleaning his cage, replacing food, water etc. Then sit in the room with him for awhile and let him explore. Leave the cage door open and see if he'll go back in on his own. If after 1/2 hour or so he doesn't go in, then use the cloth to catch him and return him to his cage.

Good luck!
