Unhappy Crying

Okay, so it all started back on the 9th. I was getting everyone ready for bed, when Samantha went to the side of the cage to be near me. She leaned towards me, and started talking to me softly. My budgies rarely ever try communicate with me, but she was definitely trying to tell me something. I wasn't sure if she was upset about something, or if she was just being affectionate.

A day or so later, she did the same thing, but I knew exactly what it meant. She's upset about something. The only other time I recall her talking like this was when Scarlet was dying, and Samantha was crying because she realized what was happening to Scarlet. She constantly cried until one day, she stopped. That was the day I found Scarlet laying dead on the bottom of the cage .

She only seems to do this in the evening when it's almost time for bed. She seems fairly upset and will sometimes close her eyes while crying.

Less than ten minutes ago when I was about to go up to bed, I had to put the vacuum away. I guess the noise woke her up, since I could hear her crying before I went up to bed. I talked to her gently from outside their room until she quit crying, then I went up.

I'm really upset about this. I don't know what's making her so upset. Honestly, the vocalizations are heartbreaking! They aren't loud or anything, they're more of a soft, mournful drone.

I don't think she's crying because Ju's unwell. The one time she was crying she was bent over while holding onto the perch, and was closing her eyes. For the past few months, she's been needing to lay on her wooden platform perch to rest for around two hours or so a day. Maybe she's in pain or is dying? She's been mostly crying in the evenings before bed.

What's wrong? I don't want to see her upset! I really hope she's not dying, because if she is she's probably really scared. She understands death, and know the signs. She's seen so many of her friends die.

She's still active, flexible, feisty, and has a good appetite for an old girl. She must be around 14 years old now.

I just don't know what to do. She's telling me that something's wrong, but I don't know what it is. She's looking to me to make everything better, but I don't know how! I've neglected her for so many years, but I guess we've finally become close, and she doesn't have a whole lot of time left. Despite the fact that I don't deserve to have someone as wonderful as her in my life, she still loves me! She's looking to me for help, but I'm probably going to fail her, just like all the other times when she needed me the most.

Ahem, so what do you guys think? I'm probably going to put some lemon oil on the underside her platform perch tomorrow since she likes it so much.

Take her to vet for checkup for any underlying disease. Hopefully you and Samantha both get relieved by going to vet.

Robyn. You might have to take Samantha to the Avian vet for a checkup to see if there is anything wrong... You have to be kind to yourself ...Comfort Samantha keep her warm...I am sure you didn't mean to neglect Samantha but all budgies should be loved they need us and they rely on us to look after them..... Now that you are getting close you can try to build a bond with her but first make an appointment and get her checked out as soon as possible...Please let us know how she is after you take her to the Avian vet....

Robyn I know you like to do things as alternatively as you can and I respect your beliefs and life choices. However at this point in time I feel Samantha does need to see an avian vet, she could be in pain and when needing to sleep it hurts her the most they can advise you and then you make the choice that is best for her. You are so lucky to of shared a life for fourteen years. You must of made so many memories of that lovely girl.
Please let us know how things are soon. Hugs to you and soothing thoughts for Sam.

Thanks everyone. I know the perfect vet, too. Dr. Morris. We take all of our "exotic" animals to him. A hamster, a turtle, two leopard geckos, fish...

Know what? I really do want to take her to the vet. As you said, Cathy, I like doing things alternatively for my babies, but only to a point. Something is definitely wrong, and a vet is probably her best bet. But, you guys know how my parents feel about taking birds to the vet. I guess I can try being really emotional about Samantha for a week so they'll let me take her. It's the same every time. I know something is wrong with one of my babies, but they won't let me take take the little one to the vet. Then, I'm obviously very upset because I owe the little guy. Then when I keep begging to let me take the babe to the vet, they say that my birds only make me anxious and that I shouldn't have them.

Know what really frustrates me? I have enough money to take her to the vet, but my parents feel it's a waste because "a vet can't do anything for a bird." I honestly don't know what the heck that's suppose to mean. I mean, if we can do life-saving surgery on a fetus in the womb, I'm sure we can figure out how to make a bird better.

OH. MY. GOSH. Dad said yes! I'm going to wait a couple more days (trust me on this), then I'll take her to the vet. However, if she gets any worse, I'll take her ASAP. In the meantime, I'll try to make her as comfortable as possible. Poop, taking her to the vet will definitely be an experience. I'll probably stick her in the chihuahua's carrier. Luckily, it's summer so it is nice and warm for her.

Seriously guys, this is nothing short of a miracle! I guess as soon as you mention an animal in pain, Dad's a sucker. I'm not going to mention the vet to Mom, since she's the one who's adamant about it being a waste of money. If only our first avian vet experience wasn't with that incompetent guy who googled how to treat a constipated bird (Ju).

Do you really need the permission of your parents to take your bird to the vet? I mean it's your pet and it's your money! Your parents opinion shouldn't matter here - it's your business what you spend your money on!

Surely your parents will let you take your budgie to the vet ... A bird has just as much right to go to the vet like any other animal... Can a friend take you and Samantha to see the avian vet... I'm sure your parents will let you take her... If you need your parents approval ask them when they are in a good mood or when you think the time is right...Robin tell your mother that birds are not a waste of money they are your life and part of your family and you love them.... I really hope your parents will let you take Samantha to the vet as soon as possible....

Please please take your budgie to the vet. She might be in pain. That is what she is trying to tell you. Please take her ASP. You have had her all these years and she trusts you. Only a vet will know what is the matter. I couldnt sit there and hear a little budgie cry without trying to get help for her. Just like any other animal.

Yay! That's good news! So you have to ask your dad in the future when you have to take one of your birds to the vet...

Thanks everyone . I'll maybe see if I can take her to the vet today if my dad has time to drive me. I know, I really need to get my license .

She's definitely going to butcher me when I try to put her in the carrier.

Oh, and my mom doesn't really think birds are a waste of money. She just thinks avian vets are . She questions their ability to actually figure out what's wrong with a bird and make the little guy better.

I honestly don't know why they get so worked up about me spending my own money on my own animal companions. Oh, and another thing that always gets me is that they think the budgie will die from the stress of going to the vet. I mean, people take wild, feral, and abused animals for medical care all the time. The only way Samantha would die from stress is if I started violently shaking the carrier, which I'm not planning on doing anytime in the near future.

Don't worry guys, I find her discomfort very upsetting. I'll take her to the vet as soon as I can. I'll call the vet to see when I can make an appointment with Morris.
