Hello, welcome to the forum! It sounds like your little guy is adjusting, but might be showing some obsessive or psychological issues.

You mentioned he was moving from side to side. Would you consider this movement to be like the repetitive swaying of a zoo animal that is being kept in too small of an enclosure with nothing to do?

My Ziggy used to pace and sway back and forth because he had been kept in a really small cage with not much to do. It was a bit of an obsessive behaviour that he'd do when trying to figure out how to get over to his food, water, a different perch, etc. Maybe Tweeto's doing something like that?

What are the dimensions of the cage, and what toys do you have for him?

Maybe you can post a video of his behaviour on youtube for us to watch? It might help us figure out what's wrong.

If you have a mirror in his cage I would remove it for now. It may scare him to see another bird. Important to remember it takes a new bird quite a long time to adjust to his or her new home and new people and new food and new cage. Everything is new so be patient with him. Treat him gentle and please read all the good information here.

Default Don't worry this happens sometimes

This has once happened to my budgie as well.. She used to move corner to corner rapidly and frequently.. She sometimes used to hop up down the perch again and again coz she was in a smaller cage.. And more over she was alone and had nothing to do else than eating and drinking so i shifted her to a big cage with another budgie and they both are a family now.. So need not to worry just try giving him a partner or a bigger cage with some toys or swings.. This will cause an effect to his behaviour by keeping him busy..

Hi and welcome

Nothing to worry about Tweeto is just trying to get out of cage

Aviary bred birds or birds having out time does that and takes time in adjusting when he do that go near the cage to divert his attention

You have a new member of your family. As above, Your budgie is fearful and wants to be free. Try adding toys like the Kabob and millet spray any type of toy or forage food that keeps the beak busy. Make sure the cage is as big as you can afford as this sounds like cage may be small. Put on background noise -music -TV-budgie sounds from you tube. Spend time nearby talking or singing to him. It takes several weeks for many budgies to relax. Can you put a light cover over the top and sides to reduce any possible fear of an unknown predator nearby. Be sure you have a cuttle bone, brown mineral salt wheel, Manu rose to give him choices of what to chew. Our budgies like corn on the cob and will eat the cob to threads. Using the beak is integral to budgie behavior and a scared budgie may respond by trying to bite.

My Husband brought a hen to me from the big aviary she had a bit of discharge from the vent . So I trimmed the vent feathers and she got a bath. Then I wrapped her in a double layer of paper towel and rubbed her head a while as I waited for her to dry a little. Well, the first thing she did was try to bite so I rearranged her blanket so it was high enough to chew the paper towel and bingo my fingers became far less interesting than chewing the paper towel she calmed down and chewed for a while as I rubbed her head and she was almost asleep by the time she was dry enough to put in an observation cage. She will stay in for a couple of days and be given electrolyte and probiotics As a boost to her immune system . I suggest that you add some electrolyte and probiotics to your birds water as going to a new home is very stressful and can cause loose droppings from the stress.

Are you feeding the food the bird got at its former home? Start by feeding what your bird is familiar with then read the area on diet and nutrition and see lindseys cutelittlebirdies for hints on preparation. Most budgies get a seed only diet which falls short of good nutrition. the transition can be frustrating, but will help keep your budgie in good health for many years
Budgies need fresh veggies, some fruits, basic seeds like canary millets and oat groate with treats of the fancy finch type with lot of oils in the seeds,
Pellets and or a good vitamin like Soluvite D will help pick up any nutrition short falls in the diet. Roudybush , Zupreem, Harrisons, nutriberries all have good nutrition Purchase the canary size pellets as the budgies usually prefer the smaller seeds/pellets Egg food is a great source of nutrition. Prepare at home or purchase Quiko or similar at the pet store or on line..

Read to him from the various sections here on TB so he becomes used to your calm voice. He will calm down when he realizes you are not out to eat him. Good nutrition will reduce nervous reactions as well B vits in electrolyte .
is a good source for this. Blessings, Jo Ann

Hello and welcome to the forums

I agree with all the advice given. Make sure to keep him calm and that he knows you won't hurt him. Music, soft talking, and you can read to him, these all help.
He should settle down in a few days Most budgies go through a cycle when they come to a new home: First is fear, and they sit quietly and don't move or chirp. Then they explore a bit and try to escape, as they don't know you won't hurt them yet. As they get used to you and see your kindness and love, they'll grow out of it soon.

We'd love to see pictures of your gorgeous boy if you get a chance. Feel free to ask about anything that you're unsure of, we'd love to help you!
Hope to see you around the forums!

Talking

Hi All,
Thanks for ur reply. He has a bathing tub with a small duck (TOY) in that tub in his cage and two small parrots(Toys made from key rings) hanging in the cage. A green small ball to play with .. a swing.... but he never plays with those... I usually palce a mirror (Very small) 2 steps outside the cage... and a big duck toy... when i am at office fr work.. so that he doesnt feel alone...but i remove it as soon as i am back from offc and start speaking to him and play music softly...he has copied my kissing sound which i give him morning and night... I am giving him seed diet which he used to get in the pet shop..as nothin more is available in Mysore, India ..will try to give him apple this weekend and lets see if he eats or not..

Today morning i found that..the strings which were used to clipp his wings he has removed them.... yesterday...and they are lying on cage ground.. so he has first..opened those strings..he now knew that he can fly easily...so he is now trying to open his cage... INTELLIGENT tweeto.. I have tied the door with cooton string... so that he doesnot lift the door up from his beak... Not sure of cage dimension.. but the cage is good fr a single bird.. As i stay in single room with a kitchen and small drawing room.. i keep the cage on my bed ,just beside my laptop when i am home and i sit down on floor..as i am not using the bed fr sleeping so that he doesnot catch cold... i palce the cage on a plastic table in the living room when i go fr offc and keep the light on. During night ...I place a cloth on the cage and put off the light in living room/drawing room with a small night lamp in my bedroom (Just beside the living room)

Any ways this weekend i am going to get more toys fr him...and get a phon spply fr him to play all his fav songs and bird sounds so that he doesnt get bore wen i am at work... all i just want is him to be COMFORTABLE and HAPPY... just want to give him a lovely home.. i feel really sad when i am seeing him try to fly away...Thank you all for ur replies..

Forgive me but may I ask was your budgie tied with string to keep him from flying?
If he was please don't do this as he will be very frightened and it could severely hurt him.
Perhaps I have misunderstood you.

Start to sit next to his cage and read out loud for him so he knows your voice is nice and a friend. He will soon like hearing you, offer him some thyme, basil, capsicum or bell peppers, broccoli if you have these . Keep asking questions that I how you will learn !

hello pretty boy, Thanks for ur reply.. actually Tweeto is untamed so the pet shop man had cliped his wings by tying string...he said that it wont hurt him ...and would be easier fr me to train him on hand.. as i am new bird owner so i was not sure about this so i didnt stop him... but iwould not clip his wings... from now on.. if he is happy in this way i will let him stay as he likes... love him so much.. but not sure i will be able to tame him or not as he may fly or eschape if not clipped..as said by the pet shop owner..... anyways just want him to be HAPPY..
