PetriesMommy is on a distinguished road
Default I'm a new Budgie Mommy!

Hello everyone!
I'm so excited I found this forum! I have read and learned so much the past few months!
After many months of reading and research my husband and I brought home baby budgie Petrie! (Pe-tree) Petrie seems to be less than 3 months old. He still has baby bars to his cere and his eyes are completely back. We still aren't 100% sure if hes a she or he.
I do have a few questions!
We've had baby Petrie for about a week now and he really doesn't do much of anything. I don't know if hes still scared or maybe if hes so young? He doesn't chirp at all until I turn on budgie youtube videos. When I do, he chirps and screeches and flies around a bit (He has a HUGE cage) I know they are social birds, but we decided on just one so it would hopefully bond with me. Did I make a mistake of just bringing home one baby? My other question is, we keep our apartment between 75 and 80 degrees. I can't seem to find a good article about house temperature. I did purchase him a snuggle hut, but the only time hes been in it was to get the millet I left inside and that was a one time deal. I think those are my main concerns as of now! I'll probably be back in the future with more! Thank you everyone!

Welcome to Talk Budgies Jennie!

Congratulations on your new addition, we would love to see some pictures of him when he is is more settled in

From your description it sounds like he is still exhibiting normal behavior for a budgie that has been in his new home for only a week Each baby is an individual, and some will need a bit more time to get really comfortable when compared to others.

Have you been playing the radio or tv softly for him? That can help a great deal in helping him to feel more safe and secure in his new home. Covering three sides of the cage will help him feel more at ease as well, since he will not have so much to focus on at one time all around him.

I would suggest you also have a look at our training and bonding forum here for more information regarding making your little cutie as comfortable and at ease as possible during his transition period as well

Hi Jenni and to Talk Budgies!

Congratulations on adding little Petrie to your family.
The temperature you keep your house at is fine for a budgie so no worries there. I would suggest you consider removing the snuggle hut from Petrie's cage thought. There have been instances where budgies have been severely injured when they've caught a toenail in the material. Budgies don't need a hut or enclosure to sleep in as their instinct is to perch to sleep.

To familiarize yourself with the forums, please take the time to read through all of the How To Guides, the FAQs and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.
You'll find most of your basic questions are answered after you've read through all of them.

I'm looking forward to hearing more about Petrie and hopefully seeing some pictures soon!!

Welcome to TB! Petrie will take a few weeks to warm up to you and to settle in. Just take things at his pace and be near his cage as much as possible. When you are not home leave some music on for him to listen to so he doesn’t get scared or lonely. You can use millet as a reward for when he approaches you or to lure him near you so he knows your are safe. I would take millet out of the cage and use it just for training, or you can hide some bits around his cage to get him to explore his cage.

I, also, would like to see pics

And, 75-80 is a good temperature

Best of luck and I look forward to seeing you around TB!

Hello and welcome to Talk Budgies

It's wonderful to hear you're joined the wonderful world of budgie ownership. Congratulations on your new little one If Petrie's cere is pink or purpleish, he is a boy, but if it's pale blue and white, he's a girl. You can post a picture in the "Sexing Budgies" section and we can tell you for sure.

You've been given great advice on how to get him to settle in. Usually it takes 2 weeks before a new bird is fully accustomed to his home. Don't worry!
Feel free to ask about anything you may be wondering about as we'd love to help.
It's great to have you here on the fourms and hope to see you and little Petrie around here

Default Just a little update

I just wanted to stop by and say thank you! MISS Petrie is doing pretty well! (Here cere is a kind of a lavender color on the bottom and white around her nostrils! It looks like Mochas in the sexing budgies post) It did take a good two weeks for her to settle in. Shes playing with her toys now and she LOVES music! She still isn't interested in us touching her, but we're working on that very slowly. No need to rush it. Shes still on seeds, but we finally got her to eat some broccoli. So, we are making progress. Thank you for all of your help! I can't wait to share our journey with everyone!

He is coming along all right. Takes some time to get comfortable in a new place. When he does, which will not be much longer, you will have years of each others company as he is quite young now.
