Question Lost my budgie bond!

first off im new to this site and idk where to post so sorry if its the wrong place.
I bought my first budgie 8 months ago. Its a female and we bonded with really good but she seemed like she needed a friend so we got a male 7 months ago (one month after her) and he is so scared. we never got him tame and now she has got aggressive toward us and we lost our bond. We separated them today to try and tame them but they were "in love" and now they are even worse and quiet and sad... what should I do??

Welcome to talk budgies Kaya...

Sorry to hear that it seem's like your bond is broke with your hen. In all reality she still will enjoy you but prefer's here new friend. You could have them in seperate cages right next to each other, and work with them one at a time, or leave them in one cage together, and do the same. Either way, It is going to take time and patience as you know from having already established a bond with her. We have a lot of good info over in our taming and bonding section Sticky's, and I'm sure some folk's will be along to offer advice based on their past experience's with your situation...

Hi Kaya and to Talk Budgies!

If your budgie is around 8 months old now, she may either be coming into a molt or into breeding condition. Either can make a budgie more territorial and aggressive.

If you do choose to cage your male and female together, please be sure you are doing everything possible to discourage breeding as they are both too young and breeding, done correctly, is a big responsibility.

When We Don't Want Eggs! - Talk Budgies Forums

Randy has given you good advice with regard to re-establishing your bond.

Often, simply going back to the beginning and starting over by sitting next to the cage(s) and talking, singing, and reading to your budgies will help them feel more calm so they can learn (or relearn) to trust you.

Moving on to resting your hand on the outside of the cage as you talk helps them realize you mean them no harm.
From there, you can progress to holding your hand inside the cage but not making any moves toward them. Moving slowly and deliberately at the budgie's pace takes a lot of time and patience but will definitely pay off in the end.

To familiarize yourself with the forums, please take the time to read through all of the How To Guides, the FAQs and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.
You'll find most of your basic questions are answered after you've read through all of them.

I'm looking forward to hearing all about your budgies and hopefully seeing some pictures soon!!

Thank you guys! I have made progress with them both in the last couple of days. Its amazing how much reading to them helps. Although I have them in separate cages now my hen (Kiara) is finally sitting on my shoulder again! and Nigel (my male) is starting to sit on my finger as long as I have a treat for him. They are both 14 months but I am not ready to breed them until I have them both fully tame.
Thank You!!

Kiara is a sweet little bird. Look's like that bond is remembered well by her...

Thank you FaeryBee! And she is super sweet Jonah, when she wants to be I put them back together again because they seem to both be tame! YAY! I'm positive the biggest part was reading to them! They love it!!!

I am thinking about breeding in about a month so I am sure many more questions will come. I have done a TON of research but I read a lot of things can go wrong. I bought a kettle bone, mineral block, nesting box, new toys, and shavings. BUT I have not put them in yet because of all the bad things I read that could happen to my budgies! I love my budgies and would be heart broken if something did happen!

Kaya,

I'm really glad to hear you are doing extensive research before you decide whether or not you are ready to take on the responsbility of breeding budgies.

If you have a successful clutch, what are you planning to do with the chicks once they are weaned? Will you keep them or do you have friend/family who would be interested in giving them safe and loving homes?

Before you do decide to breed your budgies, I would recommend you spend some time reviewing the information in the following links.
