Talking Nameless!

Hi everyone!

Yesterday I got my new little fella (90% certain) home. When at the buyers place, he jumped on my finger, after being handled. He is hand tame and was out of the cage yesterday, but I don't want to scare the life out of him! I've left him be for 24 hours, however, I don't really know how to approach him today. I'm sitting by his cage right now and within the space of about 10 minutes, he's gone from not moving to moving a little and even trying to get some millet (he's just eaten I'd say before I got home as his crop is bulging!). He seems to be relaxing with every minute that passes - surely a good sign!

My questions to you -

1) when should I start introducing my hand?

2) Would it be okay to leave him without food for the night time and then early (as the sun comes up) offer seed on my hand and leave him with soaked/sprouted seeds and veggies during the day? We're in winter.

3) what's the best routine to start getting him out or should I just do it as often and as long as I can?

Thank you so much!

Also, he's a green/ blue normal, so if you've got any name suggestions, I'm stumped!

Hello Darcy!
1)Well... as you got him yesterday, you can make one step at a time. At this stage, you can sit by his cage and talk/ read to him. After some days (or weeks) you can do this touching the cage at the same time. After some time, you can put your hand inside the cage while you talk to him. It's important that he gets used to your voice. If he accepts that and tries to explore your hand, then you can open the cage door to let him fly.
2) I usually leave their food available in their food plates/containers all day and night. You can offer soaked seeds and veggies during the day and every day. Fruit once a week and hard boiled egg/egg food twice a week.
3)I think I may answered this question above You can keep a routine by doing this every day. You will gain his trust and all the following steps will be done so easily.
Hope I helped! Oh, I suggest the name Basil!

Hello as welcome to TB, if you post a picture of your new budgie we can help you be certain of his sex and that would help with naming as well.
How old is your little fellow? If he is already used to be handled I would actually be placing my hand inside he cage and see what he does.
Make sure you interact with him as often as possible, did he come from an aviary or a pair of budgies in a breeding cage set up? When you are not home leave a radio or tv on for him as silence is a sign of danger to budgies.

Thanks Despina! A little, I know the whole ritual but he was being handled daily at the breeder as he's hand raised so... I'll take it slowly with him for the first few days and see how we progress! Thanks!

Thanks Cathy, he's 6/7 weeks. He was in a larger cage with maybe 20 other youngens but he was handled daily from what I could gather, I will try my hardest with him tomorrow, maybe see what he does. Thanks!

I know, I forgot to mention that one of my budgies, Aries was hand-fed and he wasn't so afraid of us either. But I followed that procedure with all my budgies because I am building trust and then they are even more relaxed with me. Glad I helped!

Congratulations on your new little one! I can't wait to see pictures I agree with all the above information, can't really add much but some name ideas

I think he sounds like his name should be Dublin! Reminds me of rolling green hills covered in clover

Also, I like Gamma or Shaolin for him, too.

I made a naming guide sorted by gender and colour a while back, feel free to check it out for more ideas!

Hope this helps, keep us posted!
