Himaris is on a distinguished road
Default New Budgie!

Today, I bought a new budgie! I got him from Wings of the World in Bothell. Also, could the members of TalkBudgies help me with some things? How old is my budgie and how should I make him feel at home? The breeder said she doesn't know the age so I'll just ask here. I'm not sure what I should make him, but I was thinking Enzo. What do you think?

Hello and welcome to the forums

Enzo is a beautiful boy, I think the name suits him very well I would say he's about 5-6 months old because he's had his first moult by the look of his cere and head barring but his irises still aren't fully visible.

To make him feel at home, you can play soft music, as silence means danger to budgies. Also, you can cover his cage on three sides. Don't try to touch him for the first week or two, just get to know him. You can sit by his cage and talk, sing or read to him. After that, you can start to get him used to your hand by slowly introducing it to him.

Also, I would suggest getting maybe a few bell toys or singe budgies love those! I see you do have some natural perches in your cage, that's good, as dowel perches of all the same size can cause foot problems.

It's great to meet him, as well as you, and it's wonderful to have you on the forums. Please do ask about any questions you may have as we'd be more than happy to help!

Hi and to Talk Budgies!

Enzo is a very handsome little male.

Budgies are often submissive for a few days because they're terrified.

He may sit quietly and not move, chirp or sing.
If he sits near the bottom of the cage, you can scatter some seed on the cage floor so he can find food until it learns where his food dish is. You can also place a very shallow dish with a little water on the cage floor for him.

Do not handle or touch him for about 2 weeks.

To build your budgieís trust, sit by his cage and read, talk or sing quietly to him for a period of at least 10-15 minutes, 3 or 4 times day. After the 2nd or 3rd day, rest your hand on the outside of the cage when you talk to him so he'll learn that your hand is safe and will not hurt him.

After a week, rest your hand inside the cage when you talk.
Donít make sudden moves, donít try to touch him.
Let his get used to the idea that the hand is now in his safe place and not harming him.
After 2 weeks, begin moving your hand slowly toward your budgie and begin your taming and bonding sessions.

Congratulations on your new budgie boy! Judging from the pics I also estimate is age at about 6 months old.
Enzo is a great name for your gorgeous boy and I wish you the best of luck with your new friend.

Enzo is a lovely name that suits your new budgie. He is going to be a bit scared and stressed so be very carful to move slowly and talk to him as often as possible . Read through all the advice Deborah has offered and you will be on your way towards becoming a much better budgie owner.
