Hi all, I wasn't sure which area to post this in but hopefully I'm in the right place.
So a few weeks ago our female budgie, Lady, passed away. Our male budgie, Vyvyan, has been dealing okay, and his behaviour is generally normal except for two things. Now he follows my partner and myself everywhere and is very clingy, like he will perch on our shoulders for long periods of time. Second is that when he is not with us, or in his cage for the night, he will fly to our closet which as sliding mirrors and will follow his reflection very excitedly, and has on multiple occasions fallen asleep next to his reflection.
We think he is missing his friend, and wanted an outside opinion. Should we get him a new friend? Is it too soon?
Furthermore, we wouldn't want to get another female, but maybe a male friend? We were also thinking if we should get a cockatiel or a finch friend? Has anyone had any experience with mixing these bird types before? Thanks for any advice. :)
If you decide to get a new bird please remember you should quarantine the new bird(s) for 4-6 weeks.
Quarantine means housing your new bird in a different cage in a different room as far away as possible from the room your current bird(s) is in for a period of 4-6 weeks.
Budgies mask symptoms when they are ill. Symptoms may not show up for over two weeks. Often you will not even realize your bird is not well. Many budgie illnesses are airborne which is why you need to quarantine your new bird in a completely different room.
I would recommend getting a male budgie friend for Vyvyan.
They will develop a bond and become best of friends.
A finch is too flittery and skittish and not really the right species to befriend a budgie.
Cockatiels and budgies can become friends, but budgies are sometimes a bit too excited and energetic for the more docile Cockatiels.
In my opinion, when looking out for Vyvyan's best interests, another male budgie would be best. :)
I agree with faery Bee another male budgie will be perfect for the situation.:budgie:
I will third the budgie idea. Your Vyvyan does sound like he needs a replacement for his lost friend. As Deb stated, budgies can be too active for tiel. I have a tiel that is the opposite...he bother's my budgies who have little interest in him. It has gotten to the point where my tiel now resent's their rejection and nip's at them as he chases after them...:budgie:
I'm so sorry to hear about Lady! I agree that a new budgie male friend will help Vyvyan feel better. Let us know how it goes!
