Default How to make a budgie happy after a loss of cage mate

Hi guys,
thank you for opening this topic.

Just recently I lost my budgie Piers to an infection (rip). My other budgie Saucy has gotten really really sad. He has changed behaviour wise and I'm worried he may get sick cos of all this stress.

How can I make him happy?? If i play on piers voice to him would that be a bad idea (i haven't yet) because it may stress him that hes not there with him anymore. What about buying another friend. I do not want this bird to get sick because of stress so any help would be advisable.

Saucy is kind of a nervous bird but tame.

Thanks X

Saucy sounds like a bird who is mourning, which is to be expected after the loss of Piers.
Since he's been with a friend and is naturally a rather nervous bird, I would get him a friend.

Because the new guy has to be quarantined for 5-6 weeks before they can be introduced to prevent the spread of possible hidden diseases, this gives Saucy time to get over his grief and for you to build a strong bond with the new guy, as well as strengthening the bond with Saucy.

I think this is the best option

Helllo thank you so much for your helpful advice
If I get two birds, would that be wrong..like do you think I just should get one?
Also, should it be the same mutation/color etc as Piers or do you think he can will be OK with a different colored/looking budgie friend?

besides, do you think my bird may die of worry or do you think he can be saved..if you know what i mean

thank you once again x

If you get two birds, the chances are that they will bond while in quarantine and leave Saucy out, or else Saucy will only bond with one of them and inevitably one budgie ends up being the third wheel.

For this reason, I think you should get one bird. He won't mind as to the colour, maybe it's even better to get a budgie that doesn't look like Piers as then he will move on from his sadness easier, I would think. I would say...choose whichever mutation you like as long as the chosen budgie is healthy

As long as they receive lots of care (which I have no doubt you are giving him ) then they will be fine, usually in a few weeks.

Sit with him, read to him, and spend more time with him than usual. Now that he is alone, he will benefit greatly from more interaction and it will help him be less moody and depressed.
Also, since he's grieving, I would boost his immune system a little by giving him a little organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with the mother in it in his water, as this stimulates the immune system to safeguard against possible illness while he's in this state

You can buy this kind of vinegar in a health food store or a similar place.

I am sorry Piers has left Saucy grieving as he is, Budgies do grieve and they are all affected differently. It sounds like Piers is taking it very hard poor boy, I agree getting him a friend would be very advisable. I also agree two new birds will not help him at this time.
While you new budgie is in quarantine they will possibly hear each other and call out this will help make Piers become interested in another budgie maybe.
It is wonderful that you know and can understand the grief Piers is experiencing . I hope all settles soon .
