Hi everyone. We are thinking of getting our female 2 year old budgie a friend. What we are wondering is what is the best to have 2 girls or a girl and a boy. She's been a single bird her whole life and just want to make sure she will be comfortable. Is it better for her to have a mate? I don't mind her breeding.

My first question would be, how old is your budgie?

Two females sometimes get along well with one another but sometimes they can be aggressive with each other. Getting another female may be a problem unless you are willing to house them separately after quarantine if necessary.

It is possible to have a female and a male yet discourage breeding which may be best for your hen's well-being depending on her age. Additionally, breeding is a big responsibility if done correctly and is not recommended unless you do extensive research before making that decision.

If you do decide to get an additional budgie, please remember you should quarantine the new bird for 4-6 weeks.
Quarantine means housing your new bird in a different cage in a different room as far away as possible from the room your current bird(s) is in for a period of 4-6 weeks.

Budgies mask symptoms when they are ill. Symptoms may not show up for over two weeks. Often you will not even realize your bird is not well. Many budgie illnesses are airborne which is why you need to quarantine your new bird in a completely different room.

Please read all the stickys in breeding section breeding should be with proper knowledge and preparation

If decided to breed go for a mature male otherwise female is the best choice

She is 2 years old. Breeding is a huge decision with lots to learn about. I wouldn't want to go in to it not knowing what I'm doing. My husband wants a boy but in the end we want to make sure that our girl happy and not lonely.

How would you discourage breeding?
