Hi, so this morning when I went to check on my budgies, Astro appeared to be fluffed up, this worried me because I know it's a sign of illness, but then he began jumping around the cage and running back and forth to water and food so I don't think he is sick because it associates sluggishness which he is not. Even when he's jumping around and eating he's slightly puffed up, do you think he might be cold? I've checked all around his beak and eyes and his droppings and have seen nothing so I am almost positive he isn't sick. Any and all opinions are greatly appreciated!
I've also heard that it could mean they're just in a cuddly mood, he is trying to desperatly climb out of his cage onto me and just snuggle in the crook of my elbow! I just don't know what I should do. So many people have so many reasons for puffiness and I don't know which one is right.
If it is not cold in the area he stay's then he most likely has something going on. Has he molted recently, or any sign's of one starting ? A wellness check at the vet would be prudent because budgies hide illness well. How about a couple closeup pictures of him...
He came down from Heaven unto this earth below
He came down from glory and praises untold
He came down to man fashioned in their way
He came down to rescue, He came down to save
I set up an appointment with the vet because he is still puffed out. I changed his paper at the bottom of his cage so I coukd see the droppings better and th new ones are very liquidy and do not look normal. I'm very concerned and I just hope he will be fine until his appointment. He is still eating and drinking.
The vet doesn't know exactly what's wrong with Astro so he gave us a couple of things to try, he wasn't too concerned so I'm hopeful that it isnt too bad and that he'll get better soon. The vet said that he could have become stressed because I was gone for a week so I'm hoping that's all it was and the needle he got will boost his immune system. He also said it could be something bad in his seed, so I am replacing it, and he said it may be a non spreadable virus causing his intestines to inflame because he found tiny amounts of blood in his poop. Right now I have to give home 3 types of medicine daily for all of the symptoms! He said it could be bacterial but doesn't want to risk using medicine incase it isn't, so in a couple days if nothing works he'll try that. He said he's never seen something happen so quickly with such varying symptoms. Luckily Comet my other budgie was 100% healthy and the vet didn't even charge us for the exam. I'll know in a couple days whether the medicine is working or not.
Jacob how good that you know your budgies so well and acted quickly well done.
Keep Astro extra warm while he is not well and receiving treatment, did the vet weigh him at all? If possible weigh him regularly and record it, also get some Apple cider vinegar with mother in it add a couple of drops to his drinking water. This is a natural probiotic and is good for both of them, please keep us informed of how he is responding.
Astro is so much better today! He is barely puffed up, running around, eating and back to being the extremely noisy bird that he normally is! He still isn't 100% but I can see him definitely getting better. The medicine I have to give him is in a syringe and he has been such a good boy taking it! I also have to sprinkle probiotic powders on his food and luckily he has not refused eating it in his food like the vet said most birds do. I'm still keeping him warm and checking on him occasionally. Whatever the vet gave us is definitely working so I'm very confident he'll be back to normal in no time!
Excellent news, I give my budgies probiotics regularly. Apple Cider Vinegar is a natural probiotic but it must have Mother in it. A couple of drops every few days is a great help for a good bacteria in the gut.
