Default New to this forum and to budgies...lots of questions

Hello Everyone!!!

New budgie mama here Last week my son and I were playing in our backyard when a cute little budgie landed on our driveway. He was obviously someone's pet and unfortunately he escaped! Well, I didn't have a heart to just leave him outside...the rest is history

Went to the petstore and bought everything we needed. He devoured his seeds and after a few days finally relaxed enough to chirp and walk around the cage.

Here come my questions:
1. Should I take him to the vet for a check up? He does appear very healthy so not sure about that.
2. He only eats seeds. I offer fresh fruits/veggies daily but he doesn't touch them. I know seeds only diet is not healthy for them. How do I get him to try things.
3. I bought him a bunch of toys but he has no interest in them. Is this normal? I hear budgies are very playful but this one doesn't seem interested.
4. Since I got him as an adult (and I don't know what his past environment was), is it possible to tame him?

Thank you so much!! I appreciate any input.

Hi and to Talk Budgies!

1) It would be best to take your little budgie in to see an Avian Vet for a wellness check-up, especially since you don't know how long he was outside on his own, just to ensure he's in good health.
2) It takes time and patience to get your budgie to try new foods. There are lots of good tips in the "stickies" in the Diet and Nutrition section of the forum with tips on how to introduce new foods to him.
3) It takes a couple of weeks or so for a budgie to settle into a new environment and some budgies are more playful than others. After another week or so, you can start showing him how much fun his toys are to play with by playing with them and making excited noises when you do so. He might decide to join in the fun.
4) Taming and bonding with any budgie begins with helping the budgie learn to trust you. Sitting by his cage and talking, reading or singing to him on a regular basis is a good way to start. After a few days, rest your hand on the outside of his cage when you talk to him. After about a week of that, you can rest your hand inside his cage when you talk to him. Hold it still and don't try to touch him. Just let him get used to your hand and see that you don't mean to hurt him. In a few more days, you can begin slowly moving your hand toward him and offer him some millet or seed when you do so. Then you can begin your training sessions.

To familiarize yourself with the forums, please take the time to read through all of the How To Guides, the FAQs and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.

You'll find most of your basic questions are answered after you've read through all of them.

I'm looking forward to hearing all about your budgie and hopefully seeing some pictures soon!!

Welcome to the forum. I would call around vet's offices and area animal shelter's, and explore craigslist and all the other social media outlet's to see if someone is heartbroken and searching for their bird. If you can't find an owner it is great that you are willing to give this little bird a good home...

Good for you...

I'd say whatever his circumstances were, he has struck it rich landing in your driveway. I'm sure your kindness is going to be rewarded...

Welcome to the forums!

It sounds like you're going to give this little guy a loving home

Deborah has given great advice and I'm sure you're going to be a great budgie parent.

Hope to meet the little guy soon! What's his/her name?

If you have any other questions, please be sure to ask as we'd love to help

Hi and welcome to the forum
It's great that you are so invested in learning all about the care and willing to offer him a home
A vet visit would definitely be a great idea (hopefully there is an Avian vet that you can access?)
Do you have any pictures you can share?
As for diet, they are stubborn little buggers but seed only is definitely going to cause damage down the track. Buy some crumble from the vet or pet store and introduce it through the seeds to start with - same goes for veg & fruit - sprinkle seeds through it. You will need to get creative and perhaps try making crumble & mashed veg balls and cook them in the oven. Also present the veg in different forms such as shredded, mashed, stickers etc. and figure out what he likes.

Remember to properly wash his water and food dishes every day and keep everything fresh - particularly the water dish - often the mistake is made of just emptying it and refilling it. Over the course of the day water builds up bacteria and a slim not visible to the eye can grow around the sides of the dish which can be harmful.
Another very important thing to remember is that any toys, swings or perches that have rope or any other fabric material is da goujons to the bird and should not be used - birds have a habit of chewing everything and the small fibres are extremely harmful if digested. Stick to wood and plastic. Steer clear of metal also because rust can cause heavy metal poisoning.

Hopefully I haven't bombarded you with too much info!!

So happy you have given this escapee a loving home, let us know what the vet says and we would love to see a picture or two .Time and patience are your best bet at present. Let the budgie get to know you, sit near the cage and read out loud to him so he hears your voice and learns to not be frightened.

WELCOME to your and your new addition. Good on you for trying to find the owner firstly, and then being willing to look after this little treasure. I'm sure you'll be very rewarded and love him to pieces and vice versa in no time
