Question UVA/UVB Lighting

Does anybody use UVA/UVB lighting for their budgies? If so, how long do you keep the light on daily? Would 5 hours or so a day be sufficient or too much? Thanks!

I was considering buying this one:

Bird Lighting: Zoo Med AvianSun Deluxe Floor Lamp

I think that one would be a good choice, Sarah.
Five hours a day should be just fine!

Sarah one thing you need to remember is that the bulb has to be changed fairly regularly as the UVA/UVB depletes over time. The recommendation used to be 6 monthly but some lights do not last that long and have to be replaced at 2 or 3 months. So check up on the time factor for replacing the bulb. An avian vet friend of mine was telling me that avian and reptile vets had done tests in the UK with the lights and found some were not lasting for the 6 months. I am sorry I don't know which are the better ones as I don't use them as my birds have access all year round to direct sunlight.

Thanks for the info! I will be sure to replace the bulb every 2-3 months to be sure

So I just realized that the bulb will not ship to Canada, only the lamp. Can I put a different brand of bulb that's 5.0 in the lamp or will this be unsafe? I can't any other lamps that seem good Suggestions?

That is an excellent lamp. Yes, you can use other bulb's, I have bought several different brand's advertised for reptiles. UVB 5.0 is the same whether it is sold as bird bulbs or reptile bulbs...

Thank you so much! Some bulbs I notice are 5.0 but different wattages for example this one ( https://www.thatpetplace.com/avian-su...scent-lamp-26w )is 26 watts while this one (
Amazon.com: FeatherBrite 15 Watt Full-Spectrum Bulb: Pet Supplies Amazon.com: FeatherBrite 15 Watt Full-Spectrum Bulb: Pet Supplies
) is 15 watts. Does that matter?

Do you have any recommendations for a certain company's bulbs?

I have used both the 15 watt and the 26 watt but you need to check that lamp your buying in case it has limitation's, mine are used in regular light bulb sockets. I don't know the names right off hand but will check and get back with you. I know I have bought several at petco in the past...

Thanks for your reply! Another question here (sorry ) Would i be able to use a full spectrum bulb in any lamp as long as it has within the allowed watts? For example if I have a desk lamp like this : Architect Task Lamp | Walmart.ca
Could I put this : Zoo Med Avian Zoo Med AvianSun 5.0 UVB Compact Flourescent Bulb Bird Lighting
In it? or does the lamp need specific material for it to be effective?

The AvianSun lamp isn't high enough for my cage but if I cannot use other lamps I will purchase it anyways and prop it up higher
