Budgie Changes Behaviour when I'm "spectating" him.

I'm an owner of two budgies, the male one is about one and a half years old and the female one is about one years old. When I firstly introduced them, my male budgie was jealous so I kept them in different cages, but nowdays, the budgies live in the same cages(which has plenty of space and a lot of toys which I'm changing monthly) and they are doing pretty well together. They are kissing, playing and are mating together. The female has even laid an egg, which was not fertile, but she did not hatch it even after I bought them a nestbox.((I hadn't bought them a nestbox before laying the egg because they are young and I thought she was not ready for an egg)). But, that is not the problem, when I do not "watch" them, the male budgie hangs out with the female and chirps cheerfully, but when I watch them, the male budgie gets away from the female and "acts" like he does not like her.

I would like to know whether my budgie does it because he's shy or because he's jealous or something.

OH, And I do not let them out of the cage together because my male budgie will annoy my female one causing it to fly away into the house and she's not the best flyer.

It sounds like the male is a little "shy" and doesn't want to engage in public displays of affection with his girlfriend when you are watching. :giggle:

With regard to breeding -- I suggest you remove the nestbox from the cage at this time. Breeding is a big responsibility.
For the health and well-being of your budgies, it is important you know as much as possible and be prepared for every eventuality before considering whether it is wise to allow them to breed.

If you are considering breeding in the future, please make sure you read the following Breeding Threads:
