Default Daylight hours, foraging, supplements etc.

I just wanted to ask a couple of questions so that I can ensure I'm giving Jimmy the best I can in life.

I get up between 7am-8am every day and uncover Jimmy at the same time.
He'll have the morning in his cage and then I'll let him out of his cage in the afternoon. He goes in to have a final meal at around 7pm-7.30pm and then I usually close the cage door. On the times he has gone to feed when I've been out of the room, he usually sits on the outside perches but he's sitting there content for the night.
So I take this as a cue that he's ready for bed and cover him up. Is this too long for him to be up? I've seen other posts about limiting birds with the amount of daylight they have. Is Jimmy having too much awake time?

Also with regards to daylight, I was wondering about ideal temperature in the room. What would be the preference?
And how about sunlight?

Also, I've seen a lot about different supplements to give your bird. As Jimmy is still on a mostly seed diet (I'm trying some of the fruits and veg he likes but so ar he hasn't shown much interest, just picked at some melon), are there supplements I should see to it that he has? What is essential for him?
He has cuttlefish in his cage that he has used on occasion.

Finally, I've been giving Jimmy seed on the floor of his cage to forage and he seems to much prefer to eat this way than the pots. I'm happy to keep feeding him this way but I am wary of him over eating. Should I leave his food pots empty or keep some seed in them too?

I currently provide Jimmy with cuttlefish, he has a standard budgie seed mix, millet spray every few days. I put him in a mix of a very few, small amounts of fruit and veg to try but he rarely touches them. He also has a calcium and Iodine block but again, doesn't touch them much.
I do have some Vitakraft VitaNature seed, which has a really nice mix of seed in there.

I've seen a product called Kaytee Bird Greens Foraging treat would this be a good product to get for Jim?

It's wonderful that you are doing everything you can to ensure Jimmy has the best life possible.

The amount of time Jimmy is up during the day sounds just fine.
My birds are given ~10 hours per night of sleep/quiet-time.

Sudden temperature changes are not good for your budgies nor are cold drafts. Gradual temperature changes over a period of hours are fine. A budgie should be comfortablein a room with the temperature in a range of 65 - 75 degrees Farenheit or 18-24 Celsius

I'd suggest trying some Zupreem Fruity Pellets for Jimmy.
Don't put many in the dish. Maybe a Tablespoon full and leave them in the cage 24/7. You can mix a few in with his foraging seeds in the mornings as well. Once he begins to associate them with a food source he may decide he likes them. I keep pellets in my birds' cages 24/7 and the are given rations of seed in the morning and evening. A budgie only needs about 2 teaspoons of seed per day.
It's best to measure out your bird's seed rather than just pouring a bunch in the food dish. When you measure out the seed each day you have a better idea of how much your budgie is actually eating as well as minimizing waste.

If a budgie is eating a healthy diet, generally supplements are not necessary. However, many birds do not get enough direct sunlight.
Vitamin D3 is necessary for the absorption of calcium so providing a supplement such as Soluvite D is often recommended.

Giving ACV in the water as a natural pro-biotic is also a good practice.

In general, I try to stay away from products distributed by Kaytee simply because they've had so many recalls over the past few years.
You easily prepare a dried herb salad for Jimmy rather than buying a pre-made mix for birds. What could be easier/faster than stirring together various dried herbs such as: Rosemary, thyme, oregano, basil, parsley, and cilantro into an "herb salad" and store it in an airtight container.

With regard to fresh vegetables, the first vegetable my guys tried (and loved) was sweet corn kernels sprinkled with a teeny bit of garlic powder (NOT salt).
Budgies seem to love "spicy" tastes.
My guys adore fresh basil, cilantro and chickweed.
They also like zucchini and red pepper.

Thanks for all the feedback. I see so many different information and products and you get overwhelmed with what exactly is best for your budgie.

Right now the temperature is quite nice as it's summer, but it's not too hot. I tend to get the sun round in my room in the evening, but in the winter it can get quite chilly, so I'm going to get a thermometer for my room.

I've also found the pellets from a supplier on Amazon so I'll be ordering those later.
Got the Vitamin D3 and ACV in the basket too!

When I'm at work tomorrow I'll pick up those dried herbs and make him a little dried salad up! yay! I tried some fresh parsley with Jimmy but he ignored it. Oh and he has had red pepper as well and again, ignored it.

Thanks for all the help.

Very comprehensive reply by Deborah

I could only add (actually subtract) that if your budgie get at least 15 minutes of direct sunlight every day you can avoid supplement D3 and UV light

I got Jimmy his herbs! He has Rosemary, thyme, oregano & parsley mixed together. I also got him garlic granules as well. He hasn't had any yet as he's a sleepy baby but I shall try him with some tomorrow.

He'll probably ignore it. But I have the pellets ordered too and can hopefully start him on a new mix of things. It'll be interesting to see how this goes.
