My little boy Crusoe seems awfully lonely, I do my best to be there as much as I can, but as I go into my senior year of high school, I realize I can't always be there. So I was thinking of bringing him home a friend. How would I go about doing this? He is 1 year old, he has been home for 7 months and is a real sweetheart. He is pretty shy and has never shown an ounce of aggressive behavior towards any of the family or the other pets. (Two society finches) Does his gentle behavior have any benefaction on the possibility of a new budgie or could he freak out?
Crusoe would probably be extremely happy to have a little male budgie as a new friend.
I believe getting Crusoe a buddy is a great idea.
Please remember if you decide to get a new friend for Crusoe you should quarantine the new bird for 4-6 weeks.
Quarantine means housing your new bird in a different cage in a different room as far away as possible from the room your Crusoe is in for a period of 4-6 weeks.
Budgies mask symptoms when they are ill. Symptoms may not show up for over two weeks. Often you will not even realize your bird is not well. Many budgie illnesses are airborne which is why you need to quarantine your new bird in a completely different room.
After the quarantine period, you can place the two cages side by side for a few days so they can get acquainted through the bars before you introduce them in neutral territory.
You are being very caring and adult in your thinking towards Crusoe's wellbeing and happiness. I think another budgie would be a tremendous idea for him. I would get a male as Faery Bee has suggested and be mindful of quarantine .
