Default Help with gender and color mutation for budgies

Hi. I just got 2 budgies. I need help with there gender and color mutation. The breeder said they are both males. I think it's one of both. The one, I think, is a sky blue opaline and I think female. It's around 5 weeks old. The other one, I think, is a sky blue opaline diluted and Im almost positive male, because of the cere and, although they said they are both the same age, I think it's older. Any thoughts? Thanks

I think the 1 in the first 2 pictures is a girl as i see pretty big rings around the nostril area, normally a young males cere is solid pink/purple, as for the 2nd 1 he is 100% a boy.

Thx. That's what I was thinking. I'm a bit disappointed because I didn't want a male and female, but my daughter is already attached.

Welcome to the forums!

The first budgie is a sky blue yellowface II dominant pied opaline. The second looks like a normal skyblue dilute.

They both are beautiful! The second one is definitely a male. Although I agree with the assessment of the first budgie's gender, to know for sure, would you post some pictures in full, natural light, close up, with no flash of the little one's cere? I see lots of pink on there too so a picture would help confirm the gender.

It's lovely to have you with us and congratulations on your new little friends! You've come to the right place for advice and if you ever have any other questions, please be sure to ask as we'd love to help.

Hope to see you around! Do you have any names for them yet?

Hi "Starling Wings"! Thank you. I'm excited to be here. The names we have picked are "Pip" for the possible girl and "Angel" for the boy. We think they are awfully pretty too. We love them already. Here are a few more pics to look at. Hopefully they help. I am a little disappointed. We were wanting 2 males so not to have babies and we wanted cage mates. Oh well I suppose.....😉.....we love them.

She is a beautiful girl! I have to say, has a tricky cere. I think it is a girl because of the large white nostril rings, but there is a lot of pinkish purple under it, too.
Lovely names, and they're perfect in case Pip turns out to be a boy

To amend my previous comment, her mutation is sky blue opaline dominant pied, not Yellowface II. The first set of pictures made it seem as if she had a yellow face

You can still keep a male and a female together without any problems. Just because they're together doesn't mean they will have eggs, especially if you try and discourage it.

Check out this thread for tips on how to discourage egg laying
Many members have male/female cage situations with no problems at all

https://talkbudgies.com/articles-budg...want-eggs.html

They are both so beautiful!

Thank you so much for all your great information. We are going to let them stay together and see how it goes. They are good friends already and call to each other when they are seperate. It will be interesting to see how the mystery of pip unfolds, lol. Thank you for being so welcoming and I'm glad to have such a great place to go with questions......
