Hello All! I have had this little birdie for about 2 months and she has been an interesting one. I have only ever had males before. I rescued her from a shelter. She is an adult, but I could not tell you how old she is.

She seems to be bored. I have tried so many different toys and re-arranged the cage. Nothing. She only sits there. She chirps occasionally, but that is the most active I have seen her. I know that some books say that a quiet inactive budgie may be sick. She seems perfectly healthy though. Her beak and feet are clean, she keeps her feathers clean, she eats well, drinks water, and uses her cuttle bone. She just doesn't play at all.

I am wondering if it is loneliness? I have a theory that she is used to being with other birds from her previous home (wherever that was). Only because she likes to sit close to things like her cuttle bone or a toy. She sits right up next to them and doesn't move. When I approach her cage she gives me her full attention and dances back and forth on the perch for a minute, but then settles again next to an object.

Training-wise I have had little luck. She is just as jumpy as the day I got her. I spend a lot of time talking to her and holding my hands against the cage but she has shown no signs of warming up to me.

Thoughts? Should I get her a friend?

It sound's like you are doing everything you can to help her. I would bet it is more fear, and caution, than boredom. Hard to say what kind of life a shelter bird has had. I hope some of our folk's here can give some advice and thought's, and I believe your patience and persistence will eventually pay off, and you will be rewarded...

Edit to add: I merged your two threads into one, so we can address all possible angles of your bird situation in the same place. I personally think having a second budgie would be great, but it will certainly make taming or bonding with her even tougher than you are experiencing now. I like to watch my budgies enjoying life with each other, and I find that as enjoyable as my own interaction with my cockatiel buddy. If you decide to get another, don't forget to quarantine for 4-6 week's, and don't forget, we love pic's here...

Firstly let me say Karma to you for taking in a rescue budgie.
Being a rescue can make the whole process a bit harder as you have no background or information regarding her.
In regards to perhaps she was used to having another budgie around, if you can happily accept two budgies will bond to each other far more easily than a human flock member then yes get her a feathered friend.
On the other hand if you have the time and patience needed to work through her reluctance then keeping her as a lone budgie would be more beneficial to you.
My own personal view would be to get her a friend and simply go about training and befriending the two of them. The joy you will get from watching them both interact and live happily will be a huge plus in my way of thought.

Hi Felicity and to Talk Budgies!

Karma for rescuing your little Eleanor from the Shelter.
You are obviously a kind and compassionate person. Randy and Cathy have both offered good advice.

I agree that getting a friend for your budgie may help her to be happier and more active if you are willing to accept having untamed budgies bonded to one another or to devoting additional time and effort when it comes to training two.

To familiarize yourself with the forums, please take the time to read through all of the How To Guides, the FAQs and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.
You'll find most of your basic questions are answered after you've read through all of them.

I'm hoping to see some pictures of Eleanor soon!!

Hey Felicity,

I have had a similar experience with my budgies where they would just sit on the same perch and only move for water or food. These birds need tons of patience. So what you could do is let her get used to her surroundings for a bit longer and when she is ready you can start putting your hands in her cage, but maybe try tempting her with some millet of her fav treat Also it's awesome that you are putting your hand against the cage and talking to her which is always good as long as you repeat it daily Getting her another friend could be a good idea and it will hopefully make her feel better in her surroundings and have a friend to play & preen with

Congrats on adopting her!!!!
Best of luck!

Talking Horray!

I'm getting through to her! I got her a new perch made from a grape wood vine. She LOVES it! She plays on it all day. I have never seen her move around so much. I placed a bell toy near it and she is playing with that too.

The best part is that she is starting to want my attention. I have been sitting near her a couple of times when I hear a clicking noise. I turn to look at her and she is looking directly at me, trying to call me over.

I'm soooo happy she is making progress now! Who knew a grape vine perch would fix the issue!
