Default Figured Out What's Wrong

Okay, so remember how a few weeks ago I posted about how Samantha was getting all upset in the evenings and how I thought it was because of pain and how I ended up taking her to the vet? Well, I'm pretty sure I figured out what the real problem is. She's afraid of the dark.

Every evening before bed, she starts getting all worked up, and I began wondering if it was because of the dark. Then, this morning, when Mom went into the budgie room to open the blinds, Samantha was crying. When she opened the blinds, Samantha quit crying and was happy.

Now that it's 7:20 and it's going to be lights out at 7:30, Samantha has started crying again. And when I begin to close the blinds and I tell them it's bedtime, she starts getting quite upset.

So anyways, should I get a FeatherBrite Moonlight bulb, which would mean I'd have to order it from the US and pay for shipping, or should I try to rig something up myself? Does anyone have any experience with the moonlight bulb? Does it just give off a subtle, sleepy haze, or would it keep them up? I need something that would allow her to be able to see a little. Because on dark days, even though I have a UVA bulb in with them, she starts getting upset because of how dark it is.

I don't think getting a special moonlight bulb is necessary.

I assume in Canada they sell normal "night-lights"?
I just have a small night light in the rooms with my budgies' cages. Nightlights are sold in the U.S. in places like Target/Walmart, drugstores, etc.

Hi. Robyn. I use a little night light but for me when mum goes away and it doesn't hurt Indi when I put it on...

If Samantha doesn't like the dark maybe a mild night light will help her.. Maybe she is scared of the dark... I don't know.... I have never had this with my budgie.... He just talks in his cage in the dark till he settles down..... Let us know how you go...

There actually are a couple of night lights in their room to guide Abby to her pee pads. However, they're nowhere near bright enough for Samantha. I'd never experienced a budgie being afraid of the dark, but this definitely seems to be the case. With her being as old as she is, I wouldn't be surprised if she gets confused and disoriented when it's dark.

I need something that dimly lights the room, but isn't so bright that it keeps them awake. Wait! I could use one of those reptile moonlight bulbs, perhaps!

Man, it was so sad the one time I accidentally woke her up at 11pm. I was putting the vacuum away, and I guess it woke her up. I heard her crying quite loudly from her room and she sounded really upset. I feel so bad about that. I know when I was little, I was terrified of what lay in the shadows, waiting to kill me. Yes, I had a pretty scary childhood. It's kind of amazing how "normal" I turned out.

Most places that sell nightlights will have one or two choices that are blue, that is what i use for mine, and would say it is comparable to the moonlight you refer to....

Edit to add: mine are blue L.E.D.

Hmm. The outlets in their room aren't in the best positions for night lights. Do you think it would work if I strung up some small, black paper lanterns or something?

Where does she sleep at night time in relation to the other birds and perches and swings E.T.C.
She must be very insecure to be acting this way have you tried some soft music in the back ground and having the night lights you use should be enough realistically. Maybe she needs to be in a small cage by herself with a light next to her cage with a snuggle toy and such, I feel so sad think she is so upset.

Thanks, Cathy. I've decided to try out the night lights, although I don't think they're quite bright enough. She sleeps near the other, I guess. At most she's four inches away from them. Every night, she sleeps on the swing that's a bit left from the centre of the cage. Charlie's like an inch away from her and is sitting on the green T-perch, Ziggy is is about four inches away and is sleeping on the bungee that's on the right side of the cage, and I have no clue where the other two are. Ju's probably on the sisal atom which is on the right side of the cage, and I wouldn't be surprised if Alice was sleeping on a perch at the back of the cage, or was sleeping on the atom with Juey.

I've started reading to them before I put them to sleep, but I don't know if it helps to calm her or just prolongs her anxiety. It makes me feel bad now that I know she's actually been afraid of bedtime. Like I said, I was always afraid at night when I was little. I actually cried myself to sleep on more than one occasion, too terrified to call out to my parents. Maybe I should also try setting up a lamp in the hallway outside their room so she can see if any predators are trying to get in. I mean, the only predator that goes in there at night is our 2.5 lb chihuahua, Abby, but she is a prey animal, after all.

I'm in Canada too, and I purchased a regular night like from Dollarama which is what I use I attached it to an extension cord and hung it up on the wall close to my birds cage and it works perfectly! For only $1.25

What about keeping Samantha in a separate room at night where you can leave the light on for her?

I wonder why after all these years the poor darling has developed a phobia? It's so sad it makes me feel like crying too.

I hope it can be resolved for her.
