Default Traumatized keets

So two weeks ago I got injured. Owen was just beggining to molt. I tore something in my back and was on the floor crying bloody murder for 5 hours or so followed by a couple days of crying. They watched this. As I couldn't move to stop the fit. Now they are always puffed up. Owen is having troubles with his molt. They unfluff when I feed them or go by their cage to talk to them. I still don't have much use of my right arm so haven't been able to reach in the cage to visit/socialize like they are used to. I guess what I am getting at is how do I help them? I have tried finding similar posts/experiences to no avail. They just started cherping a bit, still no singing like I am used to. On more side thing as I don't want to start a new post.. They won't eat seed or anything else till I feed them some slightly moistened oats (rolled oats/plain oatmeal) is this going to harm them. Is it OK to feed on the daily? Thank you kindly.

I'm sorry to hear you were injured and hope you are doing better now.

In all probability, your budgies are acting a bit different than you are used to because they are molting and, because of your injury, you aren't able to give them as much time and attention as they are used to.

Give your budgies egg food for added protein during the time they are molting. Hard boiled egg mixed with cooked quinoa (or cooked oats), and some flax seed. You can also add in very finely chopped vegetables. The protein will help them as they are using lots of energy growing those pretty new feathers.

Try sitting near the cage when you can just to talk to them, sing to them or read to them. You can do this when you are reading to your human kids - just include the budgies in story-time too.

They may be quieter because of the molting. Many budgies are less vocal and less active when molting. Offer them a shallow dish of water for bathing or lightly mist them if they prefer to help with the itchiness molting causes.

The slightly moistened oats will not hurt them and they can have it daily.

Best wishes!

I couldn't agree more! I'm so sorry your injury happened, and that it happened to coincide with your babies moulting.

I dearly hope you feel better and I'm sure your budgies will, too, soon

Sorry to hear about your back injury, prayer's for your speedy recovery. Deborah has offered some great advice on going forward, and I totally agree with the molting being the main culprit of your budgies behavior...

Smile Traumatized

Prayers and Blessings coming your way for you and your Budgies. Try playing soft music for you and the budgies. Hopefully this will help you refocus on some thing other than the injury. time has taught me that the pain feels less when you can redirect how you think about chronic pain. Try thanking your body for letting you know about the injury but now you need to focus on healing the body. anything works, meditation, crossword/suduko , music TV radio or CD's borrowed from the public library. We listen to audio tapes of many top books.
For me it helps, when I have just had it!!! Pull in the peace and that can include bringing out any of your budgies that are hand tame. When Sky and Apollo hang out with me for a little while it changes my point of view.Change will come. You will fell better!! Blessings, Jo Ann

Peepers was/is not in a molt.just Owen. Had the incident repeated Monday, thankfully to a lesser degree. (Will save you the details as this forum is about birds.) Anywho, they spent three day huddled together in the top farthest corner of their cage. Did not eat either, I am hoping they drank kinda dont think so. I am lucky their order came in yesterday. (Had to get dog meds used what I saved by not going to the vet and got new stuff) a new cuttle bone(way better than Walmart already), a huge cobob and well as harrisons/zupreem food. I took a pain med and spent an hour in the cage. Owen did the strut back and forth on my arm. Peepers rubbed me something silly as both purred like cats. Super cute btw. As soon as I left the cage they ate and drank LOTS. Even ate the new food without hesitation. Today they are singing. They really are like kids. Anyone who reads this in a similar spot. Sometimes our kind reassuring words may get them by, but its touch and feeling us to make sure we are ok is the best. Thank you all mostly kindly.

Didn't want to start a new thread. So an update. My run of the mill birds have become therapy/helping birds. They have gotten better with my "episodes". Owen has this special song and dance he does now when it happens. Keeps both mine and my sons mind on him which is super helpful. He molted OK. Peepers has takeing it on herself to try and entertain my daughter. She will ack ack ack at her if her attention goes else where. They really do team work. It's rather amazing. The new pellet food not so much a hit. They prefer oats lightly moistened with the pellets and lettuce. Corn and egg during molt (not so much when not molting.) They don't eat as much seed as they used to for sure. From when I got them to now, you would never have guessed they are the same birds. Almost any can now put their hands in the cage and they will gladly perch on them. Peepers seems to think every one (including the dog) owes her kisses. Boy she gets mad when her demands are not met. They are healthy and happy. I have you to thank.(y'all know who you are.) Someday I wish to pay your kindness forward. Sorry for the lack of updates. I normally pm people. I just can not type like I used to. My next step is someday finding out what kind of budgies they are. Besides super awesome sauce birds! The bird truely is the word. Hugs budgietalk forum.

Thank you for the great update.
I'm so glad to hear that Owen and Peepers are doing well and even helping as your therapy birds.

Light and Love to your and yours.
