Default Wont come out his cage

Hi all,

my nan's budgie doesn't seem to come out of his cage anymore since we got a new cage which he seems to love. I'm glad he likes his cage so much but worried he'll get less and less tame.

The first cage my nan had I wasn't very happy with-it seemed like the cage was too small (I wasn't there when she got it). However, my nan had the budgie out very often (everyday for at least an hour, usually leaving cage door open so he could go in and out when he wanted).

After a while I found a great cage that was cheap and about 3 or 4x the size of the old one so I bought it for him. Since we bought that cage he hardly comes out of it! As soon as I finish cleaning his cage he's back in it again. Is it normal for them to want to be in their cage all the time? He has free range of the lounge but only seems to come out when I fetch him out, then soon goes back. He used to be very very tame and wanted to be with you constantly (but this was more when he was a baby) but he just wants to be in his cage all the time. Any thoughts?

When budgies are young and new they will seem to be very tame and let you do almost do anything with them.
Once they become accustomed to their new home and start to relax and mature they will show some of their own personality and traits.
Getting a bigger cage was excellent, does your Nan have some toys with mirrors in his cage at all? being a lone budgie he will bond to a mirror or shiny toy thinking it is another budgie, if there is one in his cage he will want to stay with it thinking he is with a friend. Hence why he hardly wants to be out of his cage and away from his friend.

I agree with Cathy Also, before birds are 100% tame, if they have a huge cage with lots of food, toys, and water, they may not even want to come out at all. It's like if you got a huge mansion with a pool, seven in-home movie theaters, a hot tub, 3 kitchens, etc., you wouldn't want to leave, either! Until he gets used to his new cage, it's possible he won't want to come out and explore anything else

Thanks guys. Yes when he was a baby he would always land on me or my nan (he lives with my nan but I see him every week and have him when she's away), if we left the room he'd try and follow us.

Yes it does look like he's living in a mansion now lol it's huge. He has lots of toys-a mirror, a plastic bird, balls with bells on, a swing, a ladder.

I did want her to get 2 budgies but she's 90 and he already makes enough mess just him (when he's out), if we ever end up with him permanently I think i would get him a friend. She wanted one that talks (read they only talk if you only have the one) and he does talk, we've had budgies before and they were nothing like him. I think because we got him from a breeder this time not a pet shop he's a lot healthier and tamer.

Well as long as he's ok and happy, my nan is happy because she's there with him all day anyway and she just likes to have him there with her and leaves the cage door for him to come out if he wants to.
