Thumbs down

m\one of my pairs has recently laid 6 eggs and they mate often so the other birds see them, and I have a young male who is bonded to an older female, anyways he is "in the mood" now and so is his mate, however he has decided to mate with a particular branch coming out of my wall so therefore I cannot move it. his mate (lime) chases him off and nips everytime she catches him mating with the branch. I want him to mate with her nd she is in breeding condition so it would be great if he could figure out what he's suppose to do soon. will he just figure it out in time or will I need to do something else to discourage him? is it harmful emotionally for him to do this too much? he's been doing about twice a day for 2 days now. My cockatiel has in turn learned from him and stare being romantic with his food bowl.
so yeah they learn too quickly haha.

However my tiel's problem is fixable since it can be moved and his envoirment can be changed, but the branch screwed into my wall cannotI don't want to adjust daylight hours since I have a pair layig eggs and I actualy do want him to breed, just not with a branch

Honestly it sounds like vent rubbing or masturbation (as gross as that sounds). It's not extremely detrimental to him as long as he doesn't continure to obsessively do it! If he continues doing it twice a day you should either remove whatever it is or move him whenever he goes to it. Another thing is that just because him and your preferred mate for him are ready to mate doesn't mean they are ready to mate with each other. You can't force them to mate and he may just simply be letting of sexual steam especially if the female he is with isn't willing to mate or he may not even want to mate with her. I have many times heard of people having to switch pairs in the past because, as weird and corny as it sounds, budgies deserve true love too and that may not happen between your current pair. My recommendation would be to get him away from what he is ************ on if it continues excessively. if your pair decides not to mate than either seperate them and remove anything promoting mating behaviour or try to find new mates. Hope this was helpful.

yes thank you. luckily he's not obsessed, it's just weird that he doesn't want to be with his mate, they court so much. but your're probably right about her not letting him and that's why, thank you

Twice a day is definitely not "excessive" in terms of what budgies are actually capable of. If I allowed my little bloke his mirror all the time, he can be "at it" at least a dozen times each DAY!

You will have to try a different pairing - whilst it is a tad unusual for a male to not want the female, she may be giving him the cold shoulder when you don't see it, and that is why he has the need to relieve himself.

Good luck!
