BeanAndBub is on a distinguished road
Unhappy "Please don't hurt yourself!"

Hi all! Sorry if this is the wrong forum, I'm at the end of my wits and made an account to ask for help on this one.

Basically, I have two budgies, Bean and Bub. Bub is the oldest (around 9/10 weeks), and Bean is still very young (around 5/6 weeks). Both are tame, but Bub does not like being handled. He'll climb upon my hand if there's millet, but he's always too busy doing other stuff to sit around and cuddle/train with me. Bean is incredibly affectionate and loves scratches/kisses/just sitting on my shoulder or in my shirt.

The problem is Bub, though. Bub has always been very into out-of-cage time, and it's gotten really, really bad. Both get around 3/4 hours out of cage time a day, which I can still manage now because I don't go to school all the time. But whenever Bub is in his cage, he will NOT sit still or shut up. He has no interest in his toys at all, just sits in front of his cage door screaming at me (actual angry screeching) or flying around frantically in his cage, which always makes me worry he'll hurt himself. His cage is big (currently only occupied by him, about 50x40x80cm), and I'm buying an even bigger one for him and Bean together, but it still makes me worry.

School starts this week, and even though it's only 2 days a week for me at the moment, he won't have as much out of cage time as he wants. His screeching and flying around in the cage gets really worrying, since he's actually angrily screeching at me a lot and I'm afraid he'll hurt himself. It's as if he won't forgive me for putting him in his cage, you know? He's from breeders, but had a smaller cage at the breeders that he had to share with 2 others, so it's not like he's missing any previous freedom, if anything he gained a lot.

Anyone know whats going on here/how to stop him from being angry at me for not getting 24/7 out of cage time?

Hi and to Talk Budgies!

Bub needs to learn to enjoy his cage.
I would suggest you interact with him when he is inside his cage and show him how much fun his toys are to play with.

Otherwise, when he is in the cage and angrily screaming it is important to simply ignore him.
Giving Bub attention when he exhibits behaviors you do not wish to continue is a reinforcement of the behavior (it is like dealing with a two year old toddler).

Welcome to talk budgies. We would love to see some pic's of your friend's. The bigger cage you are getting may help, especially if he can fly in it, and there are some new toys for him to check out...

I agree with the previous posts. Try you hardest to ignore the bad behavior and definitely don't reward him by letting him out. I think playing with him while he is in the cage is a good idea. Try showing him how fun it is for YOU to play with his toys. I hope this helps. I know your concerned about his frantic fit but try to be more stubborn than your toddler, I mean bird friend.

Oh and welcome too.

Record his cage while you are gone to see if he calms down after a bit. I did this months ago when I was in the same position as you. Play with his toys outside of the cage during his out of cage time so he can learn how fun they are.

Bub most likely calms down once you are gone. Mine will fly around, chirp and pace for the first 5-10 minutes of being in her cage but will settle down after.

Hello and welcome to the forums!

I agree completely with all the advice given. Hopefully, in time he will realise he is not going to be rewarded with attention for his behaviour and he'll stop

Best wishes to your pretty little budgies and please keep us posted! Hope to see lots more of them soon and I'm looking forward to seeing you around the forums.

If you have any questions, please be sure to ask as we'd love to help you
