Unhappy Budgie Nightmare

Hello everyone,

My little Iko had a nightmare last night, the second one she's had since I got her. I calmed him down and put a light on for her when I heard her flying around the cage and she seemed to be okay. This morning, I noticed she was missing all the flight feathers from her left wing and none form her right wing. She is having trouble flying now, do I clip the feathers on her right wing to even her out? or just let the new ones grow back and keep the ones on her right. Should I be worried?

Hi and to Talk Budgies!

Little Iko had what is referred to as a "Night Fright".
These can occur when a budgie is startled by a sound, shadow, etc during the night. Budgies don't see well in the dark so it's a good idea to keep a night light on in the room so she can see if she wakes up or is startled.

Since she is missing the flight feathers from one wing, I would suggest you clip the first 4 or 5 feathers on her right wing (don't clip them too short) to help her maintain her balance.

To familiarize yourself with the forums, please take the time to read through all of the How To Guides, the FAQs and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.
You'll find most of your basic questions are answered after you've read through all of them.

I'm looking forward to hearing all about your budgie and hopefully seeing some pictures soon!!

Don't clip too many, just barely enough to give a bit of control otherwise when the other wing grows back in a week or two you will be back in the same boat until the next moult.

Do you cover her cage at night time? We recommend that you place a cover over three sides of the cage to help make your budgie feel safer and secure, it can be a table cloth, towels, or light blanket this also helps them sleep and keep drafts and insects, mice , or any other animals away too.

Hello and welcome to the forums!

Deb has given excellent advice on how to reassure little Iko during the day She's very pretty and looks to be quite curious, too!

I hope to see lots more of her and please ask about anything you're unsure of as we'd love to help
