I am planning on buying two budgies some time in the next few months. I will be going away for the holidays and might be going away for Thanksgiving. Would it be okay to get the budgies before that, or is that not enough time for them to get used to me and my family?
The answer depends a lot on your family or close friends. Can they reliably feed your budgies, will they be willing to learn enough to realize when the budgie may need medical help and do they have a means to bring them to a vet if necessary?
If you have someone like that, just realize that going away for a while will set back the bonding process, but if the budgies have each other at least they will have company while you are away.
If you have no one who can reliably provide for your budgies while you are away, and you do not have the funds to hire someone, then you should put off having them until you do.
It's great that you are researching what will be best for your budgies before bringing them into your home and heart.
I'd wait until after the holidays before getting your new budgies if I were you. Having a regular schedule and spending time with you an a daily basis without the disruption of being looked after by someone while you are away will make their adjustment much easier.
