Does anyone know anything about Barney's Bird Farm?
Hi all,

I have always had parakeets as a child and now that I am 25 I have been taking the health and well-being of my birds much more seriously (not that I didn't before, but I wasn't very savvy about bird health-related topics). I recently brought home a new addition to my little family. My parents thought it would be sweet to buy me another parakeet. I just had the unfortunate task of putting down my little boy Cricket, who was only two years old, because of sudden blindness. He began to rapidly fade away and finally I euthanized him when I realized he was starving to death, and only staying alive because his buddy, Puppet, was feeding him. So yeah, terrible. Well then on Saturday, on a visit home, my parents presented me with a new buddy for Puppet. Surprise! As much as I adore the new little guy I am so wary of the fact that he was purchased from PetSmart. I have heard tons of terrible things like the recent outbreak of psittacosis last year. I live in California, and through some sleuthing managed to find out that my new bird is from Barney's Bird Farm (his leg ring reads "BBF").

After much internet surfing I cannot find any information on this breeder. I was hoping some of you might have some clues. I do not want to expose Puppet to any kinds of diseases (luckily, it seems that Cricket's decline might have been due to a tumor as oppose to anything bacterial/viral, as Puppet is in great health).

Any info is greatly appreciated! :budge::budgie:

Hi and :welcome: to Talk Budgies!

Please remember you should quarantine the new bird for 4-6 weeks.
Quarantine means housing your new bird in a different cage in a different room as far away as possible from the room your current bird is in for a period of 4-6 weeks.

Budgies mask symptoms when they are ill. Symptoms may not show up for over two weeks. Often you will not even realize your bird is not well. Many budgie illnesses are airborne which is why you need to quarantine your new bird in a completely different room.

Taking the new budgie into an Avian Vet for a well-birdie check-up would be a good thing to do as well. This will allow the vet to establish a base-line for the budgie in case there are any illnesses in the future. ;)

I've heard that Barney's is a bird mill that operates out of the Northern Florida area and supplies many of the big-box pet stores throughout the United States.
Look at Barney's Pet World on-line for the location.

My green cheek conure came from Petsmart (I know, I know, but I fell in love sorry). I have had him 4 weeks and he seems happy and healthy. He is also a sweet, sweet bird - very friendly and tame. The conures though get vaccinated for polyomavirus and are tested for chlamydia psittaci and psittacine beak and feather disease. Don't believe they do any of this with parakeets.

I also tried to google Barney's and couldn't find much info. I will say I am extremely happy with my conure. Just quarantine your new baby as mentioned above.

Hello and welcome

I unfortunately have no better information to offer you. Puppet will be fine as long as the new guy is quarantined as mentioned before they are introduced ;)

I'm sorry to hear about Cricket :( but I'm sure Puppet will like having a friend :D

It's great to have you with us and please feel free to ask about any questions you may have as we'd love to help :welcome:

Aww... I'm sorry about Cricket! That's so sweet what Puppet did for him! Unfortunately I can't help you with BBF but I hope you find answers.

New info: I read a post on a different website from someone who works at a pet store. She said the birds they get from BBF are all in bad condition. The post was about a baby bird they got... It almost died. Thankfully she was able to save it, but I didn't like what I read.
By the way, I may be exaggerating a bit, she said most of them had badly clipped wings and some had bacterial and fungal infections. Still...
