Default excited behaviour...

i have two birds and one goes through regular phases of behaving excitedly, after looking in his favourite mirror he starts climbing up, down and across the cage (back and forth at speed), it gives me the impression he wants to come out. but, when i open the cage door apart from initial interest in the new "hole" he carries on jumping about and then calms down. during the "dancing" he regularly returns to the mirror so it could be that he's displaying. opinions welcome...

It sounds as though he's very excited by the handsome bird he sees in the mirror and is trying to impress it with his antics.

I agree, he is actually looking for and doing some lovely display to entice this budgie to come out from where ever he is hiding.

it's a little strange that only the one bird is behaving in this fashion, i have two birds (brothers) who generally copy each other, the brother being totally calm in nature...

I would say the budgie displaying to the mirror is the more dominant one, in his eyes the mirror is his. The other budgie is happy for the dominant bird to have the mirror.
