Default Budgies out of the cage

Hi

I've had my boy Opie for just over two weeks now. We let him settle in and he was really interested in us. We starting to hand tame and he gets on our finger as soon as we put our hand in the cage. After a week and a bit we let him out. He flies around the lounge and I have him out a lot....... Maybe three to four times a day for a good hour. He goes back in his cage fine jumps on our finger n goes back in. He doesn't come if he is called but will sit on your finger whilst your sitting down etc. I just wondered if this is ok? Is it ok for him to be out for most of the day? That sounds a really silly question but I read an article on the net that said to begin with just do 10-15 mins three times a day.
Thank you for any advise

We make adjustments and adapt the amount of time and training put into our pet birds depending on their receptiveness and also on their personalities and the way they willingly interact with us.
Your Opie is responding wonderfully and you are doing an excellent job with his training. If this current arrangement is working well for both you and Opie, then you can continue with it.
You are well on your way of having a really special bond with your Opie and I wish you the best of luck in cementing this beautiful and trusting friendship you are developing with your sweet budgie boy!

Thank you for the reply. We really are bonding well and he is bonding with my husband and daughter too. I will continue this routine with him as he enjoys being out and we love it too. He is becoming much tamer being out as he will sit with us for longer and longer. Thank you

Opie is beautiful
I've had Sydney for 5 days and he's also very interested in me. Obviously I'm not considering letting him out just yet but I get the feeling it will be soon if he carries on the way he is!
How was Opies first outing? How tame was he before you let him out?

That is great. I agree with Aluz, you move at the bird's pace, and your bird is very comfortable, and obviously happy to be out and among you and your family....

Thank you both for the replies.
Carlea he was getting on to our finger and also jumping onto it, dunno if he understands but whenever we want him to go on our finger we always say up lol. We opened his main door and it took a while for m to come out but when he did he flew soooooooooooooo fast lol! It took him a while to get used to the height etc of the room but now he loves sitting on top of the fridge and also on huge draining board when we are washing up lol the first few times he was out we sort of left him to get used to it but now we let him fly and also try and sit with him on us which he does more n more now. This morning I was baking cupcakes with my toddler and he came and sat on the drawer handle next to us lol watching what we were doing the whole time lol I just love him lol

What a pretty boy, your little Opie! Well done on taming him, it sounds like he's adjusting very well to his new home

Opie is a very fast learner no doubt , how lucky for all of you. Just remember especially if you have little children around to have all doors and windows closed. In the kitchen don't have any water sitting in the sink, stove on, foods that he should not touch out for him to try LOL.
