Default How to make budgies want to come closer to you?

With a bigger cage now, when I put my hand through the door the birdies can fly away comfortably with out ever having to come close to me. How do I make them curious enough to fly closer? I want to start hand taming them, but can't figure out how to get around this.

Before starting actual step up training, your budgies first need to get more used to you and your presence around them. They must realize you are not a potential threat to them and the best way to proceed is just by spending time with them by sitting close to their cage.
Interacting with them by using your voice will help to establish the foundations of trust needed to move on with the next stage in training. So at first just sit by their cage and talk/read to them in a calm, positive and encouraging way. By looking at their body language, you will be able to tell how they are responding to you. When you see them getting increasingly more curious towards you and actually moving closer to you while in the cage, then you can begin by slowly placing your hand on the cage, offer them a little treat to eat to encourage them to perch on your hand.

You will find all the detailed info and tips on how to tame your budgies at the Training and Bonding section of Talk Budgies, so be sure to check the stickies there.

Good luck!

Aluz has given you excellent advice, it is a slow and often seemingly taking forever process but by far the best way to go. A relationship between you ad your budgie needs to be built on trust and love. Let the bird dictate the way you move forward, talk to him as often as possible, a simple hello Pretty boy when you are in the same room, sing use a silly voice they love this.
Sit near the cage and simply read out loud to him. He will come round as they are inquisitive little ones.

Thank you everyone! It seems to be working a lil bit, they finally stopped looking at me like that big thing that wants to eat them!

Well done, also if you are a tiny bit apprehensive your birds will pick up on this and be on guard themselves. Try to enjoy them as they are, and they will definitely become used to your being near them and realize you are a safe and happy flock member.
