Hi there, I have 2 budgies, one of which has kidney failure and lost the use of his right leg, so struggles to get around the cage. Our other budgie, Cheeky, who was very loving towards Joey, has now started becoming quite aggressive with him, jumping on his back and pecking him when he's lying on his perch. Do you think it would be best to get another cage and seperate the two? Poor Joey never gets any peace!
Oh I'm sorry to hear about your poor little budgie Joey - is there any treatment that can help him?
As for Cheeky, I would definitely recommend separating them as the bullying will only continue and poor Joey needs to reserve his energy. They can always have very closely supervised out of cage time together.
I hope all goes well.
I'm sorry to hear about your Joey's health issues and in this case it really is best to separate your budgie boys on a permanent basis. Your Joey needs to be on a stable and stress free environment and unfortunately, due to Cheeky's constant bullying, Joey is not getting the needed rest and peace of mind that will allow him to improve in health.
I hope Joey's health condition improves with time and proper care.
If he has mobility issues, you can custom made some special platforms (flatter platforms and perches) for your boy to be able to rest better. You can also cushion the cage's bottom with an old t-shirt or small cloth and place paper on top of it, so that it doesn't get too soiled. This will prevent your Joey from not hurting himself so much in case he falls down.
RIP sweet Tito (Summer 2008 - January 17th 2013).
You are missed and never will be forgotten.
Sadly for Joey it is how things happen in nature, if a flock member becomes ill or is seen to be weakening the others will turn on him. It is survival of the fittest. However Joey is lucky as he has you to watch over him and help him. well done for going and getting him a new home, I hope Joey enjoys and continues to have a quality of life.
I'm glad you are getting a new cage for Joey and will do all you can to ensure his life is as pleasant and stress-free as possible.
