Default Foraging Fun

A friend of mine told me about something she does for her cockatiel and that I put in the boys cage and they seem to enjoy. I thought I'd share it as it's incredibly easy and they seem to be enjoying themselves with it.

In the bottom of their cage, I put a shallow box, more like a tray really. It has three sides and the front is flat. Inside there's some seed, little bits of millet and shredded paper. The boys get to forage for their seed rather than eat it out of the pot.

I wasn't sure whether they'd enjoy it or not. This morning, I took out their food pots for a fresh change of seed and they went to the bottom and found themselves some millet and seed to munch on.

When I set up their cage, I did it so that there were no perches over the tray so that it would stay clean and mess free (as possible).

I have heard this recommended a lot-- since budgies are ground foragers in the wild, they supposedly take well to eating off the bottom. I plan to try it when my buddy comes home! I always notice the budgies at the pet shop picking around for seeds on the ground, even though their dishes are higher up.

I wasn't sure if they'd like it, but they seem to be enjoying themselves with it.

I use plastic toddler plates on bottom for their day time feeds. Millet sprays are saved for bribery. The plate consists of sprouted seed, mixed veggies, and birdie bread (mostly made of pellets but there is millet and flax mixed in to encourage them to eat through the pellet breading). I have been considering getting a shelf so I can place a foraging basket mid cage. Mine poop too much to put cardboard or paper on bottom. The toddler plate is usually filthy by the time I remove it several hours later.

All of my birds love foraging for their seed and I'm glad to hear Jimmy and Jay are enjoying it now as well!

An excellent tip , thanks for sharing. My guys love foraging as well. I think it provides them with mental stimulation as well, instead of simply just sitting and eating they re actually burning off the calories as they eat ! MAybe I should start doing this for myself

That's awesome!

I have been doing it with my budgies for some time now, it was how I got them to first eat veggies!
