Unhappy Is my budgie sick?

I've had Po for a little over a month and he usually is a very active and loud little guy. Beginning yesterday he's been fluffed up, quieter than usual (still chortles but isn't nearly as loud) and less active. I can't tell any difference in his droppings and he's eating as usual... He is out of any drafts and I've warmed the room up. I have, however, been keeping a nightlight on lately because hes still active after I go to bed and he's fallen a coupe of times due to the dark. Could he just be sleep-deprived because I've been encouraging his night-owl habits? I'm trying to avoid a vet trip because of the expense if he doesn't really need it but I want to be sure to take him if he does

Again only symptoms are fluffed, quieter and less active. Still chortling, eating and occasionally playing with toys.

Check his respiratory. Hold him against your ear and listen for any crackling noise beyond normal breathing and heart sound. and brownish marks on feathers above nares/cere? Feel the chest /keel bone. You are looking for meat on the chest it should be nearly level with keel bone. Check eyes, beak , feet and legs Check the vent and droppings should be formed little dots white in middle and black around it. You should be building a Birdy first aid kit and finding an avian vet near you for emergencies. Start your bird on ACV in his water and alternate with probiotics and electrolyte daily. If after 3 days your bird is still not quite right, a vet visit is called for. It is not cost effective to wait because the longer a bird is ill the harder it is to heal and the longer recovery. It is time for a get to know you vet check. This way you are established with records. It is good to keep a record of weight and any major changes +- noted. this is one of the first signs of trouble. Add status of droppings and you have a major clue. So instead of wasting energy wondering do something positive. Find your vet. start your kit with above and purchase a gram scale at a walmart type kitchen department or on line Windy City parrot has one for under 20 dollars. and they have avitech products which include a sugar free electrolyte . You can also Look up A home made one here on TB. Cornstarch for bleeding and other things you can get from the kitchen. so set some small bottles and labels to start. The best ACV is Braggs at health food store and we find it in our Publics market. There are good Stickys and info here on TB for first aid kit and Windy city has a section of common components. Your local pet store may also have these things. Make sure to have millet spray as a sick budgie will usually nibble millet spray and if you presoak this in electrolyte you can get some nutrition in his little heat generator.Provide some direct heat. this can be a covered hot water bottle, a microwaved sock with dried seeds , even a plastic bottle with hot water in it and wrapped in a small towel. My favorite is the Pet snuggle on amazon . It is made of hard plastic and can be microwaved for 5 minutes and last for up to 8 hours with no cords. Great for trips in the car when it is cold. Please let us know your budgies progress. The probiotics, electrolyte and ACV may head off a major illness. Prayers and Blessings , Jo Ann

P S Welcome to TB . Others should be by to add all of the things I have missed. J A

Immediately after reading your post Jo Ann I soaked his millet in an electrolyte solution and added a little bit of ACV to his water, and added another pure water dish to his cage in case he hated the ACV. I also wrapped up a warm water bottle and put it in one side of his cage and the next day he was perfectly fine. I think he was chilled and is beginning to go through his first big molt. I've placed a thermometer next to his cage so I can keep a better eye on the room temp for him and have kept the water bottle in every night (he loves playing with it anyhow) Thank you so much for your responses. I've begun a first-aid kit for him as well. He is acting 100% like his happy self, here's a pic from last night

What wonderful news. I always try to offer levels from free to a little investment and any combo that is creatively yours. We have a lot of birds and my feet get cold in the winter, so finding a pet snuggle on amazon was a great find. It has been a great gift for our friends with feather and fury coats. So yes TB members are always open to creative inventions-simple and cheap. It is so good to hear that a few simple adjustments were all you needed to make life a little better for your little family Enjoy. Jo Ann
