Default Would you get a second budgie in my situation?

I have one cockatiel (4 months) and one budgie (5 months). Budgie won't accept head scratches from me any more. It wasn't a big deal because he still cuddled into my neck and stayed close to me. The tiel has bonded tightly with me and is chasing off the budgie so budgie and I no longer have cuddle time with each other.

I'm really not too jazzed about getting a third bird but with the tiel ignoring the budgie and not allowing the budgie close to me I am kind of concerned I am no longer meeting his social needs. He doesn't seem sad and is still active and vocal but I feel bad for him.

In my opinion it depends upon how much time you have for them

If you cannot give them individually enough time go for second budgie

I agree with Chirper. If you can't give the budgie time with you without the tiel, then a little friend for your budgie would be good. My clingy little tiel hogs my attention, and shoulder time but it's ok because my budgies have each other...

I tried to get him away for some solo time and despite the tiel's complete disdain he tries to get as close as possible and covertly groom the tiel's feathers through the bars. It took bribery to get him off the tiel's cage. It is a shame my tiel dislikes the little guy. IMO the only fair thing is to get him a friend but it may have to wait a few more weeks because that means having to buy a flight cage.

I agree with chirper and Randy and would definitely get your little budgie a male buddy to be pals with!

I agree entirely with your thoughts and Randy and the other members. Your budgie will love having another budgie friend and you will get so much enjoyment watching them interact and entertain each other .

So sorry I haven't got back to this thread. Things got hectic and I don't mean busy with life but serious life changing type problems and I just completely forgot. I do intend to get a flight cage by November (barring further unpleasant surprises) but I can't get any with the drop down doors. Tico, the budgie knows how to open them which means I need to go with either an HQ or A&E maybe a Kings cage although I'm not sure what type of door closures they use.

Couldn't you just fasten the doors? I have the F050 and have just put binder clips on all the danger doors. Removable zip ties would work too.

I don't exactly understand the problem here. Couldn't you just spend time with your budgie when your cockatiel is in his own cage?

I'm already stuck adapting his current cage in a similar fashion and I dislike having to do it. Come spring I was going to replace his current cage when my bonus check arrived because of the insecure doors. I was even contemplating making the birds swap cage

Tried budgie is obsessed with tiel and will often refuse to leave the tiel's cage if tiel is still locked in. He very badly wants to be best buds with the tiel but the tiel is tightly bonded to me so not only does he ignore the budgie but won't allow the budgie on my shoulder. More often then naught budgie winds up sitting on my feet because it is the only place he can be close to either of us without getting attacked.
