Default Bar Spacing?

We have our female Blue in a cage right now with 1" bar spacing and she has never tried to escape but I just don't trust it.

I am looking at a used cage right now that is a great price and quality but the spacing is 15/16. Is this far too big? I believe 15/16 is slightly smaller than 1". The only time she pokes her beak out is if I am there and she is saying hello. Her shoulders would never fit.

Thank you in advance for your advice

It is never recommended to use a cage with bar spacing any wider than 1/2".

A budgie can easily squeeze into very small spaces and even 5/8" spacing is not recommended.

I would suggest you find a cage with bar spacing no wider than 1/2" as I'm sure you want to protect your budgie from potential risk.

Wait, are you talking a regular american parakeet/english budgie then yes your bird needs a new cage like yesterday 1/2 inch at most. If you are talking about a different type of parakeet like Indian Ringneck or Moustache parakeet then I would probably guess their bar spacing should be about the same as a cockatiel no more then 5/8 inch.

Yes my assumption was correct after a quick google search. Here is a chart with bar spacing for several species.

BirdCagePortal.com - Pet Bird Supplies, Parrot Supplies, Cages & Bird Products - BirdCagePortal.com - Bird Cage Size Guide | Bar Spacing | Chart

I really hope I'm reading your post wrong because it blows my mind how you haven't had a tragedy yet if I am interpreting it correctly.

Hmm. Maybe it isnt 1" that she is in now. Do you measure middle of bar to middle of bar? Because she most certainly can not fit out if anything she may be able to poke most of her head out. I am in the process of replacing her current cage before something happens but I am having a hell of a time trying to find a cage large enough (Looking for 20 x 20 x 50 ish) that is ~300 CDN that ships to Canada or I can pick up. Does anyone have any advice?

Also yes, just your average Budgie

The potential problem with a bird that can 'poke most of its head out' is that some cages, particularly wire cages because the wire is movable, do not have bars that are perfectly parallel. So the bird may get its head out, slide down an inch and not be able to get its head back in, and panic and become injured.

This is the Prevue Hendryx F040 Cage.

I currently have five of these cages and have no more than two birds in any of them.

Bar spacing is 1/2"
31" Long x 20" Wide x 48" High Interior (53" includes the stand)

Well I have been checking Kijiji constantly for the past month or more and just went and looked at a cage today that if I'm not mistaken is exactly this cage just a different colour:
Prevue Pet Products Wrought Iron Select Bird Cage, Black Hammertone: Amazon.ca: Pet Supplies Prevue Pet Products Wrought Iron Select Bird Cage, Black Hammertone: Amazon.ca: Pet Supplies

and he is going to let it go for $50 so it is not at all the size I wanted but for the price it will be perfect while I try and sell this large cage (it is 1" afterall I measured !!) and then at some point I might get that cage but we are getting a cat and it looks a little low to the ground so maybe something a little different but definitely 1/2" spacing at most

Thank you everyone

$50.00 for the cage you linked is definitely a great price.

Do you think that it is large enough for two birds? It just seems so small to me but my standards might just be higher than they need to be. I have Blue and I'm not sure if you recognize my username but we have the new guy after everything with Bud (name undetermined but was maybe Freddie before I suppose lol) and I am looking to integrate them eventually.

I guess in the long term I may or will still be getting a bigger cage so I suppose my question is is this large enough for them to be happy for a few months?

The cage itself is 18" long x 18" wide by 38" high.
That comes to 12,312 cubic inches.

The minimum recommended size for two budgies is:
30x18x18"
9,720" cubic inches

The cage you are looking at does exceed the minimum and the two budgies will be just fine it in for a few months.

Bigger is always better when it comes to cages so perhaps when you get a different cage in the future you'll be able to find one that is larger at that time.
