Default Help- older budgie keeping food from new budgie

My 16 month old male "Cutie" (thought was a girl) is not letting my new addition "Dude" eat! Kept them apart for correct time, then put them in 1 new large cage. "Cutie" ate the food in both bowls. Separated them in identical cages and put them next to each other.

Leave cage doors open and they do sit next to each other outside the cages but don't play with toys. BUT Cutie will sneak over and eat both from both cups.
"Dude" is not getting any food. Separated them in different rooms.

Will Dude ever eat? He seems active and certainly tame but no food in 2 days makes me scared. I don't want him to die.

You need to close the cage door on Dude's cage and allow him to eat, usually budgies tend to eat after waking and then they will clean and play and nap and then have another eating session later on in the afternoon or early evening. Leave his food dish in the cage till he finishes eating , then when you open the cage doors take his food dish out. Place it back again when he is safely back in his cage for the afternoon.

Cathy's right.. close Dude's door so Cutie can't come in and eat his food. Let Dude get a chance to find his own food dish and eat in peace.

It seems pretty common from what I hear, and the 3 I've had experience with, that budgies don't have much of an appetite at first in a strange new home. My other birds weren't like that, only the budgies. Twigs and Pix took 3 days to eat but they finally did. Mink ate very little for the first week. I'm sure he'll eat soon. Keep us posted!

I agree with Cathy with regard scheduling times for the cages to be closed to allow Dude the opportunity to eat and nap in peace.

Thanks, Moved Dude's cage to another room last eve. Played and talked with him, then left the light on and later saw him eating. I put the food in a small bowl, not the plastic cups thinking he would see it. How long should I keep them apart?

Got Dude thinking he would become friends with Cutie before our 10 day cruise but maybe I made a mistake. I'm feeding them a mix of small seed & Nutriberries.

Sometimes housing budgies separately and letting them have supervised out of cage time together works out best.
By allowing them to have their own space for eating and sleeping will keep any problems to a minimum.

How long will it be before you leave for your cruise?
