Default Say Hi to BlueO

Hello,

I'm new here (first post) and new to the budgie world as well.
So here is my budgie BlueO

He's been with me for couple of weeks now. Got him from a pet store. His head was bald when I got him, so I don't know how young he is. He is easy to tame in the evening but not at all in day time. He acts like he isn't the same guy from last evening! Initially he was reacting to call from wild Indian ring neck parrots from outside (I live in Bangalore, India), though now a days he doesn't do that often. When I talk to him, he opens his beak and imitates me (though no sound comes out). I'm yet to start training since I don't have anything to offer to him. Millet is already there in cage and he doesn't eat pallets, even after mixing with millet. I need to find something else he loves to start training.

Can someone figure out his age?

Also I realised after looking at other budgie pictures that he has very short tail. He flies without a problem but doesn't go very high (he goes upto 5ft). I hope it grows back (as told in other specific forum thread). Here is his picture where tail is visible:

Welcome to the forums and the ever exciting world of budgie ownership!
Your BlueO is a gorgeous sky blue normal budgie and by looking at him, I'd say he is 5 months old as he is in the process of getting the mature colour on his cere.
From your description and the pictures, it really seems he was kept in less than desirable conditions before you brought him home.
He will soon grow back his long tail feathers, you can also improve BlueO's feather condition by giving him some egg food. You can get egg food at any specialized pet store or make your one by hard boiling an egg, mashing it all up and add a few seeds, flax seed for example is also good for moulting budgies an you can also finely chop some veggies and put them into the egg food mix.

Since you are new to budgies and their care, be sure to check the stickies for all the vital info, pay special attention to the Diet and Nutrition and the Training and Bonding sections of Talk Budgies.

Best of luck with your new little friend!

@aluz thanks for your suggestion on egg food! Though we are vegan family, I don't mind doing this for him. How often should I give this to him?

And about forum threads, I was digging through them for a week before I got BlueO

I'm following this forum religiously and BlueO is show amazing progress! I feel proud to say he is very well behaved!! When I open the door, he comes out on his own, hangs out at his favorite places. When I want him back, I just place the cage in front of him he simply goes back in :-)

I'm really thankful to this forum and all the supporting members for their dedication and creating this huge knowledge base. It would have been miserable for the bird if I hadn't gone through this forum before bringing him. I would like to mention somethings which helped me:

1. Budgies are sold as love birds here!
2. They insist on buying two birds (even if you say you have time to spend with them)
3. Millet is the only food for budgie according to local pet store, I'm finding it hard to get my budgie other bird food apart from millet! I'm planning to buy seeds from grocery stores and make my own mix. At the same time I'm trying different vegetables listed in this forum but only managed to get him to eat coriander leaves (Cilantro) for now.
4. They tried to sell me vitamins to mix in water.
5. Forum helped me in picking up a guy
6. It also helped me to know it will be hard to train two birds at once and they won't talk.
7. Even if I want to buy another bird in future, I know that I need to quarantine and need a bigger cage and I'm mentally prepared for that.

So a lot of things could have gone wrong without this forum!

Here in Bangalore most people (about 90%) don't know budgies can be tamed and be let out of cage. They always keep them in cage, that too small. I'm trying to educate everyone I meet who have them. It's depressing to see them treated this way.

Thanks to this forum, let's save some budgies!

Hi,

Give her more time and love and she will have no choice but to give it back :-)
I believe mine adapted faster because of my wife.
She's a housewife and I told her to keep him as company whatever she is doing.
And I also spend about 2-3 hours a day with him.
So there's always someone around for him and I guess that helped greatly.
I also made constant effort to make him know that we are someone who cares for him. In the initial days I made sure he is looking when I'm changing water, cleaning and changing seed trays. They need to know you bring food, water for them and no harm.

It's a wonderful feeling to have them out. He's got so blended in, sometimes I forget that he's out!

I'm no expert by any means, but these were my experiences, hope it helps you
