Default 2 questions

Hi, I just got my bird Sammy about 3 months ago and I have some questions...
  1. How do I get him to eat apples, bananas, etc.? He seems to be really picky about his food and he won't eat anything except seeds. We even tried to make him some treats!
  2. Should I be taking him out of his cage to get exercise around the house yet? He kind of trusts me, but I have to hold him in my hand to get him out. Once he's out, he'll sit with me while I read.

That's it. I'll be waiting for your replies. Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome. You have come the best place to get good advice. Every one here is wonderful and truly care about budgies. All the articles in the "stickies" are very helpful and worth the time to read.
One little trick I used to get my girl to try carrots was to get some with the tops still on. I washed them well and while still very wet, draped it over the top of the cage with the green tops poking through. She was a bit nervous at first but soon after was having a grand time playing in the damp greens. However this is the only way she has ever played in or nibbled any greens. But I still offer other fresh food even though she usually turns her beak up at it. Like she's offended that I gave her veggies instead of other treats. Don't give up and keep offering a variety. You're doing a wonderful job already by trying to do your best for your little friend.

As someone still breaking her boys into the greatness of veg, I would recommend you keep trying. I was dicing my veg and popping it into a food pot for them and it was ignored. I also tried it on the floor of their cage when foraging for seed- nothing.

I recently started to leave it on top of the cage and they went to it during their out of cage time and loved it being on there cage and rather than chopping it into small pieces I just put some kale straight on top. Happy budgies.
I also carry a list in my handbag of safe budgie veg with me so I can feel confident getting them a treat while out.

As for out of cage time, if your room is budgie proof then I see no reason not to let them out. I love letting mine have their freedom and they mostly just spend time on top of their cage and on the rope perches that are attached to it. They also are so happy to be out and happy with their cage that they go in and out quite often when I'm in with them for a while so there's no huge drama trying to get them back in when I want them too.

Welcome to the forums!

I agree completely, getting a budgie to eat veggies will take time and patience but it pays off certainly in the end! Awesome job for getting Sammy started early

The most important thing to remember is to vary the variety and presentation of what you offer so they will be curious and try it

Favourites for my girl are any greens (kale, romaine lettuce, carrot tops), shredded carrots and sweet corn (frozen thawed)

Best of luck and be sure to keep us posted! We'd love to see some pictures of Sammy when you get a chance and feel free to ask about anything you're unsure of as we'd love to help!
