Why no specialist bird stores?

I think it's weird that I've never seen a pet store dedicated to birds.

What's wrong with birds? They're amazing pets!!!
You have the big chain pet stores that cater for all pets but here in the UK, budgies and even parrots etc, get a tiny section really.
You get specialised fish shops.
You get reptile and exotic pet stores.

Where are the budgie and bird shops?

I know a lot of people would get a bird from a breeder but I'd love to see a shop that specialised in healthy and safe bird toys/food etc. and that really gave birds the dedication that they deserve to have and that there seems to be little market for.

Is that just in the area you live in, or is that the case in all of the UK I wonder?

It is very hard for a business that just specializes in bird's or fish etc. to make a go of it competing against the big chain pet stores and internet sales....:(

All UK, I think, from my experience from where I've lived in both Scotland, and England. Also, we don't have (many?...) specialist avian vets like you guys in USA, and elsewhere, seem to have. The vet I have always used (and briefly worked for) is considered fairly specialist here in this region, and has a good reputation among vets regarding birds, reptiles and the like, but he is still also very much a general vet. Any budding vet students reading this? Please try and become an avian specialist! :):p:

In Vancouver where I live there is an avian only vet and a bird only store on a major street easily accessible to anyone. The more I learn about the bird world the more I realized just how lucky I am where I am currently living

Seriously, it sounds like whoever became an avian specialist there would be extremely popular

We have Birds of Paradise here... they are struggling financially, but deal in nothing but birds. It's where I buy all my food for my budgies, she mixes a seed mix fresh, so it's the best food I can get for them.

So there is at least one.

I have looked in my area (Lincolnshire, which is a big area in UK terms, lol) and there are no pet stores dedicated to birds. Although I know if would be hard to make a go of it and be financially secure and successful, I feel like birds are the biggest area that are overlooked in terms of pets.
There is an avian vet in town though, so I consider myself lucky in that respect.

Wow! An avian vet? That's not so common here, so you are indeed lucky! Re a bird pet store, maybe you should think of starting up your own?!:-)) :)

But they have them here in the US :). Our big chain stores here usually don't sell parrots except conures. The bird stores sell other birds, as well as bird related products that you can't get at the big pet store chains. In certain states and areas they're very popular. I know of several within driving distance actually, that have been in business for many years. Not too hard to find an avian vet either, although some are better than others. I guess it depends on where you live in the USA. Too bad there aren't more avian vets worldwide, since birds are popular pets worldwide!
