I know it's not rocket science, but how do these 'shredders' work?! :-)
I've copied this here from my 'accessories safe' post as that's a bit old now, and I'm not sure if anyone will see it.
I'm just seeking advice about one of the latest things I've got for Jenni and Simmi. As per recommendations here, I've bought some 'shredders'. I'm not sure if I've put them in in a good place / way. I realise time will tell as to whether or not the birdies will like them, but wondered if any of you have any tips. So far, J and S shown no interest in them at all. Plus I can't see how they are supposed to provide 'interest and entertainment' for the birds. If I put it on horizontally, they can't shred the long edge. If I cut them and hang them vertically, the bits just come away!
Also, re the coloured lollipop sticks: a colleague who teaches arts and crafts gave me them. It didn't say on the packet whether or not they are toxic / safe. Any ideas?
(Please bear in mind, I'm rather 'practically challenged' and so doubt I could make anything elaborate with these things!)
Without knowing the toxicity of the paint/dye, I wouldn't use the colored stick's. Get the plain stick's and dye them yourself with safe food coloring...
The shredder's I have seen are used in so many different way's that I think only our imaginations limit us. I like the way you have some of yours and even though they aren't using them now, they may. Turning them into foraging cover's might get interest. Hanging some with say kabob's, or other toys they show interest in might work too. Be sure and let us know if you discover something they just can't resist...
He came down from Heaven unto this earth below
He came down from glory and praises untold
He came down to man fashioned in their way
He came down to rescue, He came down to save
Simmi and Jenni must have seen and read this post,(!), as there has just been some vague interest in the shredders! Hopefully they know not to actually eat them though...(wish I didn't worry about them so!)...
I got Jimmy and Jay a new toy last Saturday, then I got Skye and they've only just started to use it, even though they've destroyed other toys like it. They take their time and get to it when they're ready! Good job with persistence though.
Yes, indeed they do! They're a lot like real kids, these fids....so, if they ever ask for an iPod or something dear like that, I'll want to be absolutely sure they'll use it before shelling out the cash for it!
(Sorry, just a bit of silliness there to brighten this dark, wet Monday evening!)
I would agree to dye the popsicle sticks yourself, that way you know it's safe
Also, I agree about the shredders. It just depends. And with palm leaf and yucca toys, you don't have to worry about them eating a little once in a while since it is usually pretty digestible! I worried about that when I got Mallorn her shreddable toys, haha.
and Princess Mallorn!
Thank you to Deb for her wonderful Faery magic
When I was in Michaels the other day, I noticed raffia.
That seems like something budgies would like to play with.
Is craft-store raffia safe, do you think?
It's hard to say on this too. Some of it may be treated with any number of things. Without getting in touch with the company that supplied it and having them confirm it doesn't have anything added that's unsafe.
I know others on here probably know where to get something like that but birdie safe.
